Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Pj Rwechungura. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
PJ, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
For as long as I remember. There was sprinkles throughout my life where I had an itch for a creative/artistic profession. When I was younger I went through phases after phases, hyper fixations after another., all related to unorthodox jobs & creative outlets. I auditioned for Disney channel after hearing an ad on the radio about it on Q102 back when I was in elementary school. After that in middle school I got my first laptop and discovered games like Minecraft & League of Legends, investing myself in the world of twitch streamers and youtubers. It was always my goal from the start to try and be someone on the internet. Editing and filming videos is something that is not new to me and has been with me for as long as I can remember.
Soon high school hit and I was immersed in a world of performing. Whether it was when I was in marching band, choir, theatre or talent shows I started to realize how much I enjoyed just expressing myself in creative ways and having an audience.
It wasn’t until a couple months after High School that my friend would introduce me to TikTok. At first I was agaisnt it, because back then everyone would roast you for having it. However after weeks of persuasion, I downloaded it and messed around with it, and had a lot of fun. Then Covid hit in 2020 and I ended up spending most of my days in my room making videos to pass the time. The app became addicting, and then it became a passion. Back then it was never about how many views or likes I got. Just having fun on the app was my favorite past time. Being able to be myself on the app everyday, express myself, make jokes and just share my ideas is such a fulfilling feeling. It was an itch inside my brain that I loved to scratch.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is PJ Rwechungura and I am a full time content creator on social media. I was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania but spent the majority of my life living in Downingtown PA. Growing up I was a band kid, and was in choir and musical theatre. I was constantly in a space where I can perform, act, and be creative. Even when I was home I was constantly writing up stories, drawing, and figuring out ways I can show off the thoughts inside of my head. I always knew that deep down whatever I end up doing in my life that it’ll be something involving my creative side. It was always a dream of mine to become an internet personality and then transition that into being a full-time actor.
Getting into TikTok was kind of a beautiful accident. Back in high school my friends would tell me to download Tiktok, but back then it was considered cringy. One day they were able to get through to me and I downloaded the app. It took me a very short time to fall in love with it. Recreating videos that I saw on the app, thinking of new ideas, anything I could create I would post immediately. One of my most notable moments on Tiktok was back in 2021 when I decided to greenscreen myself wearing a blonde wig into videos created by content houses & popular influencers. It blew me up in a surreal way, gaining me over a million followers in a month and leading to collabs with a handful of people, including the Hype House.
However one of the first videos I created that went viral was when I went on the app in an Elsa dress & wig. The Elsa backstory is a huge part of my tiktok journey, even though it happened prior to me even knowing Tiktok existed.
2019 I was a senior in high school. Every year my highschool had a talent show called Mr. West. (Shout out my high school Downingtown West) It was when 10-12 senior guys would perform a comedic male beauty pageant for the school (and for charity.) Every year there’s a new theme that the beauty pageant is revolved around, and my senior year we chose Disney Princesses. I was one of the last people to pick their Disney character, and I thought it would be funny if I chose Elsa. How little did I know how heavily that would affect my life a year later when I started making Tiktoks.
Most of my content is a wide range of things, mostly comedic. From me embarrassing myself online, dancing, participating in trends, dressing up as Elsa, or green screening myself onto other peoples videos.
One of the biggest things I’m proud of is a personal goal and it is my consistency. I’ve been creating content for over five years now, and I have no intention of slowing down my creative journey. Once I start something I care about, I become obsessed and can fixate on it for days on end.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect for me is just the ability to be able to express myself in a creative way. Being creative is an itch that I constantly need to scratch, so being able to have the opportunity to make content everyday is huge for me. I feel like whenever I’m editing a video, or thinking of new ideas it brings me back to being a kid again. Whether it was me acting out action movies with my friends back in elementary school with nerf guns, or playing with toys when I was a kid, having my imagination run wild was always apart of who I am. Sitting down and editing a video is one of my favorite activities. I love slowly seeing the video coming together and having people appreciate the finished product. Most of all, being able to look at my own work and appreciating it myself. Being proud of a video you worked hard on is a great feeling. Having an idea, working on it and seeing it come to life is a beautiful process.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Growing up, during middle school and high school I was always doing goofy stuff going into school. Spirit week was always my favorite time of year. I would pull up to class wearing onesies, face paint, costumes, anything I could think of. Even when it wasn’t spirit week I was doing that. So transitioning from that to Tiktok was almost natural. I just did what I did in real life and put it online. I started social media right around when Covid hit. I was making a ton of videos on Tiktok everyday, strictly for fun. I loved being able to just shit post anything I want, whether it got a thousand views or zero. Slowly, I started to really get a grasp on the app and figured out what went viral and what didn’t. How much to post, when to post, how to interact with my followers, etc. It was like a switch was flipped in my head and I was able to start getting views and gain a following. With a lot of consistency and a little bit of luck I was able to grow my account.
Advice I would give to creators that might sound a little corny but just have fun with your videos & stay consistent. Make content that you want to see and make content that you want to make. Create videos and posts that feel like you and eventually you’ll have an audience that resonates with the kind of vibe you put out. Needing luck is inevitable, but if you show up every day eventually luck will strike you & potentially take you to heights you never thought existed.
