We were lucky to catch up with Piyush Thakur recently and have shared our conversation below.
Piyush, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
As a film producer with 10 years of experience, earning a full-time living from creative work is often a journey filled with ups and downs. It’s rarely like that from day one. Initially, I juggled various projects, freelancing, and perhaps even a side job to sustain myself.Major steps and milestones included building a robust network within the industry, honing my craft through continuous learning and experience, and producing projects that garnered attention and recognition. Networking events, film festivals, and industry connections played a crucial role.Looking back, I could have potentially expedited the process by focusing more on strategic networking, investing in mentorship or education earlier on, and being more selective with projects that aligned with my long-term goals. However, every step, setback, and success has been integral to my journey as a film producer.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
One story that illustrates my resilience in the film industry involves the production of my feature film that was screened at the 73rd Cannes Film Festival.
During the production of this film, we faced numerous challenges and setbacks that tested our resilience as a team. From budget constraints to unforeseen weather conditions impacting outdoor shoots, there were times when it seemed like the project might not come to fruition. However, instead of giving up, we remained determined and adaptable, finding creative solutions to overcome each obstacle that came our way.
One particular instance that stands out is when we encountered significant delays due to a sudden change in filming permits. Despite meticulously planning the shoot schedule, we were forced to rearrange our entire production timeline at the last minute. This meant reorganizing locations, coordinating with cast and crew availability, and adjusting our budget to accommodate the unexpected expenses.
Despite the setbacks, I remained resilient and focused on finding solutions rather than dwelling on the challenges. I rallied the team together, instilling confidence and determination to see the project through to completion. Through effective communication, strategic planning, and unwavering perseverance, we managed to overcome the obstacles and successfully complete the film.
The experience taught me valuable lessons in resilience, adaptability, and leadership, which have since guided me through subsequent projects in my career. It reinforced the importance of staying resilient in the face of adversity, maintaining a positive mindset, and never losing sight of the end goal, no matter how challenging the journey may be.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Supporting artists, creatives, and fostering a thriving creative ecosystem is essential for the enrichment of society as a whole. Here are some ways society can best support artists and creatives:
Investment in Arts Education: Providing access to quality arts education in schools and communities is crucial for nurturing creativity from a young age. Supporting arts programs helps develop a diverse pool of talent and fosters a culture that values creativity and innovation.
Fair Compensation and Recognition: Recognizing the value of artists’ work and ensuring fair compensation for their contributions is vital. This includes paying fair wages, providing royalties for their creations, and acknowledging their contributions through awards and recognition programs.
Accessible Funding and Resources: Access to funding and resources is essential for artists to pursue their creative endeavors. Society can support artists by providing grants, scholarships, and affordable studio spaces, as well as access to equipment and facilities.
Cultural Preservation and Promotion: Supporting cultural institutions, museums, galleries, and performing arts venues helps preserve and promote diverse artistic traditions and heritage. Society can also support local artists and creatives by attending exhibitions, performances, and events.
Advocacy for Creative Rights: Advocating for the rights of artists and creatives, including intellectual property rights and freedom of expression, helps protect their work and ensure a supportive environment for creativity to flourish.
Collaboration and Networking Opportunities: Facilitating collaboration and networking opportunities enables artists to connect with peers, mentors, and industry professionals, fostering a sense of community and providing avenues for growth and collaboration.
Inclusion and Diversity: Embracing diversity and inclusion in the arts helps amplify underrepresented voices and perspectives, enriching the creative landscape and reflecting the diversity of society.
Public Engagement and Appreciation: Encouraging public engagement with the arts through exhibitions, performances, and community events helps foster appreciation for creativity and its impact on society. Society can also support artists by purchasing their work and attending their performances.
By implementing these measures, society can create a supportive ecosystem that empowers artists and creatives to thrive, enriching cultural life and contributing to social and economic development.
