We caught up with the brilliant and insightful PIVE a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, PIVE thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I fell in love with hip-hop at a very young age at 10 years old. My first hip hop cd was Nelly Country Grammar, I remember soon after my mom had bought me a key broad, I started playing piano, making hip hop beats & falling in love with every aspect of the hip hop genre. While most of my friends were listening to pop, country or rock. I was studying every hip hop album I could get my hands on. It didn’t matter if they where super stars or underground legends. I wanted to learn everything I could on how they wrote, the beat style they picked, the cadence they were using. I always had a knack for writing so for me writing songs & rhymes came really easy for me. It was also a way to relive stress or struggles I was going through life. I wanted to become a rapper the moment I touched a pen & pad. That’s when my destiny was set in stone.
PIVE, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I had been writing for about 20 years, but didn’t drop my debut album until 2021. A lot of the press ask me what took so long for you to put your name out there? The short answer is, After graduating high school I was severely addicted to drugs, I was homeless for a couple years & didn’t really get my act together until 2010. I had to re learn how to live life & become a part of society. Shortly after I met my wife, got married in 2016 & I was genuinely happy. Through all that time hip hop was there for me. I was still writing songs to relive stress or making beats for fun, but it wasn’t until 2020 when covid hit, that it made me realize my dream was still right there the whole time. I knew I wouldn’t be truly happy unless I pursued my passion for music. So I went into the studio & in 2021 I dropped my debut album I Will Forever Be. It received tremendous buzz throughout the hip hop community. Now I just dropped my sophomore album I Will Forever Be Act 2 in August of 2022. To the potential fans that don’t know me yet. I hope my story inspires you that you can overcome anything. Stay focused, lean on your dreams & don’t let anyone tell you can’t do something.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My personal goal is I hope my music inspires or helps someone in need when they are listening to me. But the mission since day one is to also earn respect from my fellow hip hop artists. I don’t care If I never get famous or make a bunch of money off my music. But if a fellow artist thinks I am dope whether they are big or small. Then that’s what keeps me making more music.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me I love dropping a new song or album & just seeing the reaction of people. I can’t tell you how many times I have received messages on social media where someone has just discovered me & they tell me how much they love my music or the funniest ones say how come you aint famous yet your so dope. hahaha
