We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Piper Schutter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Piper, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
My parents raised me to believe that I can do anything I set my mind to and it has inspired me to do the same for others through hair. I struggled through high school with ADHD and never thought that school after a diploma was right for me. My dad felt differently! On a lunch date one day, we drove past my soon to be beauty school and he said “You do great on your friend’s hair, why not try making a career out of something you’re amazing at?” He constantly reminded me that college is not the end all be all for everyone and he is still my inspiration to this day. I love when clients come in and give me crazy ideas that they think aren’t possible, and I think of my dad and tell them “I can do that for you”.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Piper (color.orbit.hair) and I’ve been doing hair since 2020 in Renton Washington! I specialize in vivid colors and big transformations, my favorite thing to do is rainbow anything! I help my clients feel beautiful and comfortable in their own skin, and hair! Painting was a big part of my life growing up and now I get to create more art on living humans through their hair. What sets me apart from most other hairstylists is that I hardly ever say no to something! I love a challenge and I take pride in making everyone’s wildest hair dreams come true.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Word of mouth has worked best for me as far as growing my client base! My friends and family are my number one supporters and I would even go as far as to consider them unpaid recruiters for me! My instagram has also made a huge impact on my clientele, it attracts other humans in the beauty industry and I love the relationships I’ve built through that.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
In the hair world it helps to know people! When I first graduated from beauty school, I got a message from my future mentor, Jody Erickson. She saw my potential from the start of my journey, and offered me the amazing opportunity to be her apprentice! It changed my whole view on the beauty industry, and having her be my cheerleader means the world to me. She helped teach me how to build my business from the ground up, from recruiting clients to advocating for myself and my work. My reputation in the hair industry is all because of her!
