We were lucky to catch up with Pingyu Zhan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Pingyu, appreciate you joining us today. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
The birth of my creative services business was an evolution of my design journey intertwined with personal experiences.
During my undergraduate studies, I delved deep into the realm of visual narratives. I distinctly remember a project where I realized that packaging wasn’t merely a container but a vessel for stories. The recognition my design received wasn’t solely for its looks but for the emotions and narratives it conveyed, forging a connection between the audience and the product.
My postgraduate time at ArtCenter College of Design further refined this perspective. Immersed in a diverse pool of creativity, I was inspired to elevate my designs beyond aesthetics. During an intensive graphic design project, the clarity hit me: my true calling was in combining narrative-driven design with the industry’s need for emotionally resonant branding. The blueprint for my creative services business began to take shape, centered around not just designing but crafting visual tales that bridged cultures and evoked emotions.
What gave me confidence in this venture’s success was twofold. My background of traversing various cultural landscapes allowed me to design with a globally resonant touch. Additionally, my academic accolades and recognitions, such as the International Design Awards, validated my skills and the unique direction I was headed in.
In a nutshell, my business isn’t just about offering design services; it’s about translating emotions into compelling visual stories that leave a mark.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hello, readers! I’m Layla Zhan, also known by my birth name, Pingyu Zhan. At my core, I’m a passionate designer who believes in the universality of emotions and narratives. My story began in Southern China, and as I transitioned through various regions, I was exposed to an array of cultures, each shaping my perspective and approach to design.
With graphic design, I get the chance to channel emotions into striking visuals that truly connect with people. Be it a standout brand identity or an evocative package design, I always strive to craft designs that not only tell a compelling story but also resonate widely and leave an indelible mark.
I’m immensely proud of the recognition my work has garnered over the years, such as the A Design Award, International Design Awards Young Ones ADC, etc. However, beyond awards, the true essence of my pride lies in the connections my designs foster. Every time someone feels an emotion or understands a new perspective through my designs, it’s a testament to the power of visual storytelling.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It’s when someone looks at my work and feels something – a memory, a laugh, a tear, or just a nod of understanding. It’s that silent “click” when someone gets what I was trying to convey, even if they come from a totally different background. In short, it’s all about the connections my art can forge. That feeling is unbeatable.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Absolutely. One thing that might be tough for non-creatives to grasp is that the creative process is often non-linear and, at times, chaotic. People might see the end product – a polished design, a finished artwork – and assume it was a smooth journey from concept to completion. But in reality, the process is filled with moments of doubt, revisions, and even starting over from scratch.
For anyone trying to understand a creative’s path: Imagine putting a piece of your soul out into the world with every creation. It’s personal, vulnerable, and incredibly brave. It’s not just about the final piece but about every emotion, challenge, and breakthrough that led to it. Understanding this depth and journey can provide a newfound appreciation for every piece of art or design you come across.
