Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Pinche Villa . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Pinche , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I first knew i wanted to pursue being a Drag King when I went to San Diego with some of my friends. We stumbled into a gay bar that was hosting a drag show. We stayed, got some drinks and got ready for the show. As we stood there watching performers, per usual Drag Queens, a Drag King was presented. I looked at my friend with big eyes, thinking, “WHAT, DRAG KINGS EXIST”. After they performed their number as a werewolf, it was so cool, my mind was blown. I didn’t know it was possible to be a Drag King! I was so excited about it. When I came back to San Antonio, I started to do my research and found a local Troupe called Los Mentirosos, who is composed of only Drag Kings. I decided to check out one of their shows. I went and they happened to be hosting a show called “Rey For A Day”, where anyone who is wanting to try it for a day, can. I stayed through the whole show and that’s where I decided that I had to be apart of the next “Rey For A Day” show. I talked to the MC, Gacho Marx, and got information on how to join the next show. From there it’s history. I performed my first show March 16, 2019 and have been doing it ever since.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I am a Drag King, I portray masculinity and exude sexiness on stage. I am a stage performer/entertainer and can perform for different events, parties, etc. I am the counterpart to Drag Queens. I also am part of a Drag King Troupe called SA Papis, if clients need more than one performer we can provide that.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of doing drag, especially as a Drag King, is showing others the possibilities in drag. There’s more to Drag, than Drag Queens. The art of Drag is so diverse and not everyone knows all the possibilities of Drag. I love when people come up to me after performances and tell me that they didn’t know being a Drag King was possible or that I’m the first King they’ve ever seen. I like exposing the audiences to something different.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
When I started Drag I started my Instagram and just sent friend requested to as many people as I could, that were in the drag community. From there my following grew. Also, always promoting at shows and on social media.
