We were lucky to catch up with PiKaHsSo Verbadelyck recently and have shared our conversation below.
PiKaHsSo, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I knew i wanted to pursue a creative & artistic path professionally when my mother Fahimah Catherine Moore from Aberdeen, Mississippi took me on a trip to Washington, DC to hear Warith Deen Muhammad speak when i was a teenager. While driving from Dallas, Texas to Washington DC im listening to the Fat Boys in my Sony Walkman thinking to myself wow this is so incredible what they are doing musically with their mouths i was highly intruiged with how they did that. Once we checked into the hotel and went to the convention i just so happen to cross paths with this younger guy who was around the same age cant think of his name but he reminded me of the comedian Eddie Murphy he asked me what my name was i told him then he just randomly started beatboxing i was like wow he knows how to do that. So he showed me how to do it and said hey man i know where a microphone is in the convention that sounds off over the entire convention seminar room. He went 1st & started beatboxing then i did it and about 60 seconds later alot of adults and kids came out asking who did that who was that trying to find out. I love the commotion and beautiful disturbance it caused & every since then i tought myself how to perfect the beatbox & rap. If not for that trip to Washington DC i dont think i would have ever became the mc that ive become today. So i always show gratitude to my mother who passed away January 8th 2021 she has no idea the sleeper cell seed she planted inside my mind
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
What 1st got me into the music business professionally is a popular morning radio show dj & comedian named Nanette Lee on a station down here in Dallas called k104 FM who was a frequent guest on BET’s Comicview. She just so happened to be my across the street neighbor back in the days when i lived on Dehaes Street in Oakcliff Dallas, Texas the same street i lived on when my mother took me to Washington DC. I use to always take my music up to K104 FM to try & get it played by the program director Skip Cheatum when i was in a Southern Hiphop Duo called Dysphunkshunal with my homeboy Tekneek Alejandro Rokket one day while going up to radio day to meet with the program directors Nanette Lee seen me & said i remember you walking up & down the street rapping & breaking dancing & bumping the music loud from your jambox she said give me a call Monday & i got a suprise for ya. When i called she said i want you to do the intro for the Skip Murphy Morning Show on K104 FM which played for several years across DFW metroplex and Southwest region it got me alot of attention & was like my intro into the music industry professionally.
I learned how to network and met alot of powerful people in our Dallas music scene & most of all it gave me a nice lil fan base that i will cherish forever. What sets me apart from others is my ability to be avant garde experimental and not afraid to try new things & go against the grain for the sake of the art which i take & took extremely serious. Constantly expounding upon my lexicon educating myself on the recording process & working hard on my delivery & vocal intonations. I want all my fans to know how much hard work i put into each & every verse i right it may take me a month to come up with 16 bars cause it is my mission to make sure im putting out the most thought provoking & mind blowing rhymes any human can concoct. I pride myself on always trying to deliver each & every verse in song in a unique and groundbreaking way/
Im extremely proud of being in a hiphop trio called PPT PiKaHsSo Picnictyme & Tahiti we did the official Dallas Mavericks Theme song Rowdy Loud & Proud in 2006 that has to be one of the most amazing things that has ever happened to me in my career & it couldnt have happened without Alan Cohen, Paul Monroe & Mark Cuban i thank yall so much for making that happen wow i most those moments
Im also extremely proud & happy to be working with a female producer for the 1st time ever in my hiphop career she goes by the name of Leann “Johnnalena” Vardiman & the song me her & Complete The Emcee did is Epic
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
i had to unlearn that just because society your family & friends think youre old & washed up that doesnt mean its over never stop keep trying ignore that Nay sayers & just keep on creating and see what happens with consistency
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Making people smile people knowing the words to your song people remembering & knowing your words how many people you inspire but have no idea that youve mentally moved them.
