We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Pierre Curry Garik Pugh a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Pierre Curry, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry.
Camera/video lens technology is constantly evolving and rapidly changing every day. By far the biggest trend we have seen over the last few years are shifts to using smart phones to capture whole events. There have even been entire films created from iPhones even, which is truly remarkable.
Often we get asked how do we feel about this or do we think it means our industry is fading. Honestly, we look forward to greater transitions into the smart phone realm to not only capture memories but to show off the creative in each and every individual. Our industry is not fading, actually it’s quite the opposite! It’s growing exponentially! The world is getting a front row POV that used to be reserved for “professional” studios or works with big budgets. Of course this is no longer the case.
We’ve even begun to integrate our phones into our work and creative process. We’ve captured entire photoshoots and impressively enough large portions of video too. This trend is a great benefit because it we are no longer relegated to several pieces of equipment and can lean on a device that fits in your pocket to capture and create magic.
Pierre Curry, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We started off as individual photographers with our own client base and photography styles (Garik as a landscape photographer and Pierre primarily did photoshoots with models). Eventually, as our clientele expanded we often assisted each other with our shoots. After noticing how often we were collaborating with clients, photoshoot ideas, and other aspects of the art form, we realized that it only made sense for us to work together. We were very much so open to capturing any style of a photoshoot that may come from our clients. We quickly realized that videography was an additional component that many of our customers were also requested, it was at this point GPC Media came to life.
We didn’t limit ourselves to any one genre of photography/videography and as a result, we’ve been exposed to a variety of opportunities that have helped build our success in the San Diego area.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
We went back and forth on this one, but we finally decided that we had to share it. It goes without saying that the pandemic truly tested our resilience along with every other business in the world, small, medium, big or large. Getting back to back to back cancelations with no end in sight was daunting! We had to on one end stay in the minds and in front of the faces of our followers through social media with little to no new content while also being extremely flexible to any type of event we could capture.
Flexibility was the answer in and of itself! Once we learned to lean into our flexibility our resilience and tenacity grew stronger. Now as we enter this chapter of settling into a “new normal” it is this new found skill of being flexible that makes us the most effective.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Actually this has two equal answers. For the first part of our journey it was definitely word of mouth from existing clientele or on the spot, while filming on location. That was the primary way we gained new clients. As of the start of 2022 that has changed.
Through the use of social media groups such as Black San Diego and other San Diego centric groups we’ve gotten several new customers very interested in our works. Just as we mentioned with what has made us resilient, being flexible has helped us get in front of many new faces both in person and virtually.
