We were lucky to catch up with Picasso Snow recently and have shared our conversation below.
Picasso, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
It’s funny what’s defined as a “regular job” because being an artist feels pretty regular to me… Not regular in the sense of boring, but I’ve always been creative, so the journey to becoming an artist came natural with time. Though it’s a creative journey, the operation still needs to run effectively, the same as any traditional job. Whether you’re in the office or in the studio, you’re meeting deadlines, making sales goals, answering emails, and marketing to your audience just the same. The main difference is the ability to water your own seed and watch it grow.
I’m happier as an artist because I’m in control of my journey and the outcome is determined by how much or little I nurture it. That’s the scary aspect of running a business since you really don’t know how it’s going to go, but what you CAN control is the effort put into it. The experiences, heartaches, excitement, and small wins all feel worth it when giving 100% to your craft.
What if I fail and it doesn’t work out? I’ve thought that hundreds of times but the real failure would’ve been if I never tried.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Tiffany “Picasso” Snow and I am a visual artist offering a range of services for the art enthusiast in you! If you’re looking for an amazing creative experience, then look no further than the one-stop shop! I currently offer original artwork, prints, create murals, teach children, and even host paint parties for all ages.
But Picasso Snow isn’t just a business, it’s who I am. A fun, expressive personality that sprinkles a lot of love into everything I do. No matter how big or small the project, I aim to build relationships with my clients and leave them with quality art that not only looks amazing, but tells a story. What started as a little hobby in my college apartment evolved into big dream that led me to becoming the artist I am today. I never went to school for art or even saw myself making a living from painting, but the more I put myself out there, the clearer the vision became.
It took many years of building connections, increasing skill, unlearning bad habits, and putting in the hours to reach a level of confidence big enough to quit my engineering job and shift into a full-time art practice. I’m constantly inspired by the daily resilience, strength, and vulnerability of women which is often depicted in my artwork. What keeps me going? Hearing client stories and inspiration behind the paintings they commission. Being able to be bridge their fondest memories together and portray it on canvas is very rewarding. My goal is to continue to use my platform to share my stories and others with the world. By staying true to who I am and remembering to have fun along the way, I can only imagine where my paintings will take me!
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
If you feel they could be beneficial to your success, go for it.
I know we’re evolving into a digital world, but I would much rather sell my art the old school way, building relationships. There’s certainly potential to make a good profit there, but have you ever searched for an NFT on OpenSea or another platform? The results are so massive that it’s very likely your NFT went to the bottom of the list, or worse, copied by another artist and sold for tons of money (lol). Seriously, it’s a lot of work for marginal outcome and I prefer to invest my time in other areas.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
BUY FROM LIVING ARTISTS! Seriously, there’s so much talent around us that is overlooked by the convenience of a major retailer. And it’s not anyone’s fault because we all like convenience, but taking that extra step to invest in local artists impacts the community in so many positive ways. You aren’t just purchasing an item, you’re investing in an actual person that took the time to craft something they’re proud of and its a beautiful thing. It gives artists and creatives a chance to become successful business owners and promotes unity and relationships within the ecosystem.
