We recently connected with Phyllis King and have shared our conversation below.
Phyllis, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Coming from a musical family expression was always a key feature of life. I embarked on a career as a musician learning many elements of performance, presentation and artistry. After a long stint in that industry I learned that it was more of a place I learned how to heal myself. Music remains a place I go to for solace, comfort and expression.
After music I leaned into caring for others. I went into Human Resources, and began learning how to connect with people in various environments. After a number of years in that profession I realized that Human Resources is for the company not for the people. I realized I wanted to work with and for people
I took a role as an Executive Director for a non profit mental health organization in the Bay Area. I learned the inner workings of that community and truly helping those who are disenfranchised and have nothing. I was quite successful in that. I also realized at that point that my life long passion and association with spirituality could not longer be silenced. I wanted to live my beliefs out loud and not have a dual life. It was a deep yearning. I didn’t want to ignore it any more. Although I was very successful in my career at that point, I decided to leave non profit and start my own business. That was in 2008. It was a risk. I realize all the things I did before that prepared me to be an entrepreneur. I learned how to listen to myself, and others. I developed myself in various ways to serve my clients, and enjoy being in business for myself.
At this point in my life I cannot imagine working for anyone else. It would make me very uncomfortable. It has worked out very well. meaning I am happy. I feel on purpose and do not want to do anything else (other than political activism here and there). This is what I was born to do. I wouldn’t know it if I hadn’t take the chance on my self.
