We recently connected with Phoenix Song and have shared our conversation below.
Phoenix , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Right after college, I got stuck in mind-numbing office jobs. I was fired for whistle blowing from my first job and quit my second one from sheer boredom. I left the US to go travel for a couple years to figure out if another way, another life was possible. In India, I discovered music and other healing practices. At that time, I also started doing the exercises and activities in The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. I was twenty-five. I began to contact my creativity and dream into a different life, one where I could make my living through music and healing. And at the end of the 12-week course, I wrote down my goals of writing songs, being in a band, and recording an album. A year later it all came true–and I realized that dreams can come true as I began making my living from my music.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Phoenix Song, and I am a queer, non-binary Korean American adoptee musician, singer, teacher, performer, expressive arts facilitator, and sound healer. I specialize in helping you free your voice–sing, sound, and speak your truth. I believe that everyone can sing, but most of us don’t have experience playing our body instruments. I help with the technical as well as psychological aspects of freeing your voice so that you have confidence expressing yourself, your songs, your voice. I got into this line of work because for the first half of my life, I lived up in my head and had a hard time coming into my body, breath, emotions, and voice.
Over the last half of my life, I have had the good fortune to experience many tools and healing modalities that I incorporate into a program I designed called Free Your Voice. Exercises and activities range from the sacred to the silly to help you live your authentic best life by being you and expressing your truth–your needs, boundaries, desires, feelings, etc. I like to think of my program as playtime for adults. We sing, do harmony, create improvisational songs, move and sound, tone together, do theater exercises and drama therapy, sound meditations, and create medicine songs for the world.
My group classes and private sessions are creative, compassionate, and empowering. What sets me apart from other vocal coaches is my own hard work and journey to free my voice, which helps me have understanding and compassion for your journey and a plethora of tools/resources. If you feel stuck in your life, I will help you come into your body to access a different knowing and wisdom and then help you express yourself confidently. I’m proud that I have helped so many people shift out of relationships and jobs that no longer serve them, and to move in the direction of greater alignment and purpose.
In addition to voice work, I teach hand drumming, body percussion, musical instruments such as didgeridoo and Native flute, and offer sound baths. I also offer theta drumming, ancestral healing, and grief work. My private and group sessions incorporate a wide range of modalities from mindfulness, compassion, embodied creative practices, movement, drawing, voice work, and more. In addition to more active practices, I also offer passive sound baths and performances where I inspire you with authenticity, emotional connection, and resonance. You will come away feeling more connected to yourself, your humanity, your divinity, and the whole.
I specialize in eclectic world music–a mixture of soul, blues, Arabian, Indian, Korean shamanic, and rock/pop. I focus on creating music for sacred spaces and sound baths with an emphasis on dynamics and mood mixed within stillness. My music is heartfelt and passionate. I sing like an angel and will move you to tears. If you’ve been told your whole life you can’t sing, your voice is bad, or if you’ve felt silenced or have trauma around your voice, then I am a great guide because I have worked through so much of my own vocal trauma in this lifetime and have deep compassion, intuition, and a plethora of tools to help you heal your voice and reclaim it.
My music and voice will hopefully inspire you to live your most authentic, best life.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
When you free your voice, you free your life. I am here to help you find your voice, express your truth, and transform your life with the power of your creative expression and authenticity. When you are empowered vocally, you can speak clear yes’s, no’s and maybe’s. You can become more connected with your breath, emotions, and life force as you speak up, sing out, and make some noise! You will have the power to speak your creations into existence. The more people who are living authentic, empowered lives, the better off the whole world is, as then we are truly happy and living into our purpose.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
In my early years, school trained me to criticize and critique others’ creations. As an artist and creative, my whole life is about breathing life into my own creations. As an entrepreneur, I created my own life path and job. The business side and artistic side merged as one big act of creation. I am all about trusting the truth of the moment, through improvisational songs, performances, talks. I am creating and re-creating myself anew every day and get to listen in to my heart and intuition about what passion to follow next, trusting that the universe has my back. I make discoveries about myself and the world through my art. Creating is intrinsically satisfying. It is a way to make meaning and beauty out of pain, to amplify joys, to birth and re-birth myself constantly.
I renamed myself Phoenix Song a few months ago. I now get to feel into and live into this new name for the next chapter/phase of my journey and life. As an artist, I have created my own life path and get to follow my heart and bliss knowing that I am in a deep web of connection and meaning with all of you, as you touch my heart, and I touch yours.
