We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Phoenix Malone. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Phoenix below.
Phoenix, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I pretty much taught myself everything in the beginning. I studied different creators and learned how to deliver comedy in the style of a skit. I was mostly inspired by Chapelle Show and how Dave Chappell would make these crazy metaphors and hypotheticals come to life. I wanted to do that. So I started recording myself on my iPad and I used this really basic editing app. I pretty much found my style through trial and error. i wanted to make actual comedy skits not slap stick funnies. If something is going to be great the recipe has to be original. After a while I needed to be able to do more because my ideas were growing in creativity. eventually learned how to use Adobe to edit and I’m good with it but I’m still learning. I’m always learning and I think that’s why I’ll keep getting better
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started out of pure necessity to create. When I moved to Houston after I college I was literally just going to work and grad school and it was lame. I needed a creative outlet and I started with photography and quickly found out that wasn’t my thing. I would watch different people make skits, this was the height of the vine era, and I would be like “ I can do this” so I did. Making skits grew a fan base and got the attention of actual writers and comedians. I’m well acquainted with Jen Fulwiler just off the strength of my content
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I feel like I’m life we have a passion and we have a calling. My goal is to one day have my passion replace my calling. I want to be able to create for a living. I want to act, wrote comedy etc.
I’ve experienced the dream and now I can’t settle for anything else. How I get to it isn’t really as important as staying consistent. Because when I think about it I’m light years ahead of where I was when I first started, so who knows where I’ll end up if I just keep going.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I would say the book “Outwitting the Devil” by Napoleon Hill. It’s just an inspirational book that makes you want to just take the risk because why not.
