We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Phillip White. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Phillip below.
Phillip, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I didn’t find my creativity early on in life but I always knew I wanted to do something with music in my early teens. When I was 13 I found the spice girls and I loved them each one different and unique but all put together creatively with music. I knew from that age I wanted to be a performer but I was too shy to let that side of me out in my teens. Having that desire in my heart still never went away even into my 30s. I went on a trip to thailand my first ever intenational trip and came back refreshed and renewed. I realized I had to go for my dreams and do something creative to get there. In 2015 I started doing the work and going to vocal lessons and some how interestingly got into fashion. Fashion was always a part of me and I didnt know I would be a designer before I would sing. Now Year 4 with my fashion brand I decided to take a slight break and pursue my music career. I got connected with a producer and will be releasing my first single this summer. On my break from fashion I realized Im a creative that has many ideas and paths. Im actually inspired to work on a new collection hopefully in 2022.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My desire to become a fashion designer started in 2015 when I attended a fashion show and saw Charles smith work in Dallas. He has had a big influence on me and I love his work. I didn’t know exactly how I would start a fashion brand but so glad an idea came to me through my struggle to find good looking workout clothes that were inclusive. To start the brand I had no idea how to even start but Im the king of google and started taking a look at where most activewear brands started and the common thread was LA. I probably flew to LA over 8 times attending fabric shows and seminars to learn the craft. Once I had enough knowledge I jumped and started reaching out to factories all over the world. It was a challenge but I was determined to create the best product. I ended up only launching with a jacket but that jacket was spectacular and one of my best selling items for years. As I learned I was capable of creating more I easily created great collections with more pieces that my community loves.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The best way to help artist and creatives is to support them even if you cant afford to purchase something, any word or mouth and sharing on social media can have a huge impact.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to always have creative freedom by owning the things that I work on. I own my fashion brand and I get to make the calls. I wanted to sing so I’m starting my own label so I can record the way I want to.
