We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Phillip Wheeler a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Phillip, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful projects to me personally have been the film ideas I come up with from scratch. For example, I start with a simple idea for a concept then grow it into a screenplay which then will turn into a film if it’s what I choose to do with that story. As of right now, my first feature film is nearing its completion and has earned a spot in my most meaningful because I have never worked this hard on one idea before in my life. Midknight is going on 4 years in the works. The plan is to have its first screening this year for an audience in Macon Georgia.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For me, I take my craft and education within my career path extremely serious. I tend to think and talk about subjects within my path more often than not. I do provide a videography and photography service that I have been developing for over 7 years. Now I am at a point in my life where I want to further my screenwriting skills more than anything else so I can tell the most effective stories possible. I have past success with different projects but I still consider myself to be at the very beginning of my career since what I want to accomplish is a lot further ahead of where I am at now.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
As of recent I started reading Save the Cat by Blake Snyder which has proven to be the most helpful screenwriting book I have ever read. Most likely due to my personal preference in my organizational method approach at screenwriting. Also, I have garnered a lot of information by listening to in depth interviews of some of the greats in my field such as Tarantino, Nolan, Villeneuve, and many more.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist for me is being able to get reactions out of my audience (in theater screening).
