We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Phillip Robinson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Phillip below.
Alright, Phillip thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright – so having the idea is one thing, but going from idea to execution is where countless people drop the ball. Can you talk to us about your journey from idea to execution?
Ever since I’ve graduated college I’ve made it my duty to ensure that I’m learning something new on a daily basis. This habit has helped the trajectory of every project I’ve worked on since. I’m in various career fields because of the wealth of knowledge I continue to acquire.
This nonstop expansion of knowledge fuels my ideas and creativity which is sometimes a blessing and a curse. It’s a curse because there are so many ideas that I know I can act on but I know I don’t have the time or resources to always act on them. It’s a blessing because I know that I will always have a project to work on that my audience will enjoy and take massive value from whatever I create.
One of the best stories that I can think of that really displays how I go from idea to execution is when I wrote my first eBook. The eBook is focused around my personal brand and how others can take the principles and apply it to their daily life. When I had this idea I was on the road doing news & reporting for my track and field team. Once I got back to the hotel I immediately started working on the project since I knew I wanted to release it for my birthday which was only in two and a half weeks.
Understanding that I only had a few weeks to write, edit, design, and launch the book it forced me to not over think anything during the process. I began to announce on my social media that I was working on a special project but I wasn’t going to give any details until the last day of the month. This put pressure on me, good pressure though. Once I dropped the eBook it got great feedback.
I’ve taken this hustle and mindset with me to every project I’ve done since. It really taught me that everything we do doesn’t have to be perfect, it just needs to get done. Worry about cleaning it up later.
Phillip, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started my personal brand about four years ago, I go by Phenom. It’s an acronym that stands for preparation, hustle, education, network, overcome, and mentality. I knew deep down at that moment that those six principles were all a person needs to succeed in their career or personal growth journey. Out of the six principles I believe that the third one, education, is the most important. Many of us stop learning once we finish school and that’s we stop growing. That’s why I strive to educate more than anything.
As I continued to educate myself I immediately would teach others what I was learning. This led to people always wanting to book one-on-one sessions or requesting that I be their mentor. These continuous request is what pushed me to offering coaching as a service.
The problems that I solved for my clients are clarity/proper goal-setting, time management, and offer accountability. It’s impossible to hit a target if you don’t know what your target is. That’s why the first concept we will always cover is clarity to ensure that we will be heading in the right direction and not waste any time. Once we gain that clarity we break down the goals they have so they be accomplished in a digestible way that won’t stress them out. I’ve witnessed too many times that people attempt to jump up the ladder of success not knowing that they’re jumping. Time management is the final solution we work on. If a person can’t manage their time, they can’t manage their life. I’ve developed a system that will increase client’s time management overnight. If anyone wants to continue to work with me after that I offer accountability packages that we can meet weekly for a few months to ensure they stay on track.
There isn’t one thing that I’m most proud of if I’m being honest. Every project or accomplishment has a special place in my journey. I’m more proud of my ability to continuously learn and execute on my ideas. I know I don’t hit 100% of the shots I take but the mindset that I have does allow me to have a high shooting percentage.
As cliché as it is I want all my potential clients to understand that they can accomplish anything they desire, they just have to put in the effort in the right direction to get there. You can often find me saying live the 1% lifestyle. That doesn’t mean the wealthy lifestyle, but focusing on being 1% better than you were yesterday. Focus on daily small improvements and in a year you’ll have an amazing compound effect of results.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My senior year of college I was running in an 8k championship race with shin splints. The impact from the race caused me to fracture my leg during the race, but I didn’t know. I knew something was wrong because the pain continued to increase with every step I took. I went to hospital that night and that’s when I found out.
The season was over for me but I still wanted to provide value to the team even though I couldn’t compete. I offered my videography services to the coach and I began to make highlight videos. That transitioned into also doing stand up sports reporting, something I had never done before. I gained a new skill from this and I was asked by the staff of the university to continue doing it after I graduated for compensation.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I don’t really have massive quantitative goals, I believe they are restrictive and once they get accomplished you get bored and lose your motivation if a personal is so fortunate to reach them. I just strive to impact as many lives as possible by the time I’m done.
