We were lucky to catch up with Phillip Jordan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Phillip , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Trial and error. When I first got into music and business, I had so many ups and downs. From figuring out the right products for my market to figuring out my sound, it’s been a constant game of trial and error to see what works and what doesn’t. I do wish I would’ve armed myself with more marketing aspects when I first started and more training, not being afraid to take myself seriously. If I knew what I would i knew now, I definitely would have gotten on Tiktok sooner and stop trying to curate a persona when being myself is just as or more likeable. And not being as afraid of peoples perception of me. After therapy, and a lot of self growth im learning it’s so important so show up as authentic as possible and knowing when and how to play the game. Though opposites, they go hand in hand. I definitely think my own self doubt stood in the way of learning more because i was genuinely afraid.
Phillip , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Phillip Jordan, Recording Artist, CEO, and Influencer. I started off with my very first go at my business Fashionxpj at the age of 17 selling glasses and hats. I began my official music career at the age of 19 when i released my very first song “Dreams”. Though both have been in me since an early age, it took me a while to gain the confidence to blossom out of my cocoon. I have released Three EP’s and currently in the finishing stages of completing my debut album( Coming early 2023) and Fashionxpj has relaunched as successful as ever catering to the girls who love to give baddie on a budget with pieces that can go from the gram to the club to the nail shop all while not breaking the bank. I’ve finally found my winning formula in both music and business and im excited for the world to really see. My new songs make you feel something, they remind me of a late night drive where the winds are perfect, the scene is just right, and you are with somebody you love. It’s just right, even if just for tonight.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
This one is gonna be super transparent, but I feel other upcoming artist need to hear this too. I had to learn how to be vulnerable. I started off so excited to be on stage when I was rapping, however when I began to do what I truly loved which was singing, it was rough for me to say the least. Battling my inner child trauma and anxiety had my stage fright at an all time high. I had such a traumatic experience in middle school where a teacher basically tried to embarrass me in front of the entire lunchroom and I realized I had not lived it down. Through training, practice and therapy of course, I’ve been able to truly dissect my fear of performing live and im extremely excited to get on a stage soon!!! The audience wants you vulnerable, they want you raw. When you’re nervous and stiff it makes it uncomfortable for not only you, them too. Im excited to implement what i’ve learned.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Simple things like liking and sharing a post are super important to us creatives. In a field where recognition is everything, it cost nothing to reshare a post, stream a song, or like and comment on a post. It truly helps us creatives in more ways than you could imagine.
