We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Phillip Acosta. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Phillip below.
Hi Phillip, thanks for joining us today. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
Starting up a new line of business while running our current line of business was challenging in itself. To complicate matters our 2nd in charge decided to retire early so we went through a leadership transition. Finally as a company that will be exiting the 8a program in 2025 we have to relook how we approach the competitive landscape.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
GuROO provides enterprise IT services primarily to the government and affiliated groups in the form of staff augmentation. We also provide our own proprietary virtualization platform. Finally we offer managed services in the form of a Network operations center. We are the only CSfC trusted integrator that is also an 8a. Our senior network engineering services are top tier and rival companies quadruple our size.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When i first started GuROO there were several instances where we were on the cusp of going out of business due to contract recompetes. We persevered as a team and each time survived. Understanding our customers and the competitive landscape has made us a long term fixture still performing with some of those same clients 10 years later.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had an opportunity to get into the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The teammate that was the key to us gaining access offered us a deal we did not like. In hindsight penetrating a new agency and taking that deal was a better decision. I really wish i could do that one over.
