We were lucky to catch up with Philip Ortiz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Philip, thanks for joining us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
The legacy I hope to leave behind as a photographer would be to have my work known by the world. Growing up I would go to the museums and see several pieces that would spark some emotional responses in me; whether it be happiness or sadness I would want to invoke something in them. I also would want to open various studios to not only help clients but also inspire and coach other photographers to pursue their dreams.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
My name is Philip Ortiz, I am currently majoring in Graphic Design, but I have a strong passion for photography. I first started photography once my grandfather gifted me an old, digital camera. Every morning he and I would always go to the nearby lake to take pictures of the scenery nearby. A year later my sister Kelly also gifted me a (Nixon D3200) camera for Christmas in which I started practicing taking portraits as the time progressed which allowed me to have the skillsets that I have today. The services I provide would be engagement, weddings, gender reveals, baby showers, but my specialty is portrait photography. I love being able to take close-ups of people. What I think sets me apart from others is my drive to try various types of photography. I enjoy doing headshots, weddings, etc. but I aspire to add more creativity in my photos. I love being able to incorporate more colors and combining different hues to the photo where others see it as a disadvantage, I see it to challenge myself. What I am most proud of and what the main things I want potential clients to know about my work is I love doing concept shoots. These consist of themed shoots such as Halloween or horror shoots. I have done several over the year which could be based off famous villains and/or original designed by what the client would want. Typically, Halloween is a busy time for me which involves creating a whole set from scratch to make sure it matches the theme in mind. Lastly, I am most proud for being featured on Vogue Italia for one of my most favorite shoots. It took a lot of time to get the set correct and the editing to be completed in a timely manner, but I enjoyed every moment of it, and I would do it again.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a photographer would be to see the client’s reaction after they see their pictures. Some people get excited only after seeing a few shots from the completed photoshoot but once I send them the final, edited photos they are overwhelmed with emotions. Also hearing the praise from clients from an amazing job done inspires me to keep continuing this passion of mine.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Overall, I have two goals that drive my creative journey; invoke emotions and to challenge myself. I am a firm believer that a picture IS worth a thousand words, and you can feel various emotions just by a set of photos. I want to be able to convey my message and emotions in my work. Also, I want to challenge myself while taking these shots and during the editing process. As a photographer, I love switching between types of shoots; weddings, horror/scary, portraits, etc. so being able to constantly push myself allows me to expand my knowledge and showcase skills that I never thought I had.
