We were lucky to catch up with Philip Noyed recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Philip thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Learning the craft has been a fascinating journey as I frequently pivot from one artistic practice to completely new artistic directions. I love learning new technologies to create new art forms.
I have studied technical arts such as learning how to make pottery in Japan and spending years mastering techniques. Yet, my art career has had many major pivots to explore new mediums and forms.
I am a multi-media artist. My art covers
• 3D oil painting
• Blur-motion photography
• Geometric Illuminations: Images laminated to acrylic and illuminated by LEDs
• Kinetic mobiles
• Large-scale public art installations
• Rainbow Pyramid light art
• Digital design
• Videos
• Virtual Reality (VR) art
Learning the craft has been all about moving at the speed of technological advancement. My art represents the quintessential contemporary art movement making use of creative technology that is changing the way art is experienced today.
The fact that I have learned the craft of being a multi-media artist allowed me to bring all that knowledge to culmination in my VR light entertainment experience, “Neo Art Space.”
Neo Art Space is a transcendent light art adventure in a faraway galaxy. It is like an art museum except it was created by an alien civilization of light beings and is designed to elevate your frequency by experiencing joy, wonder and awe. If it were in the real world, it would be 100,000 square feet horizontally and 15 stories high.
Neo Art Space allows people to thrill to over 30 dazzling living light art experiences – bioluminescent caves, colorful forests, radiant energy fields, globes and sacred geometric shapes – as they move through planets and star systems.

Philip, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a constant experimenter. I love discovering new technologies and figuring out how to use them for art projects. The technologies are both in terms of innovative materials such as dichroic film, rainbow vinyl, mirrored acrylic, LED lights AND making use of software such as PhotoShop and new technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR).
I am inspired by the Light and Space art movement as well as contemporary artists creating large-scale immersive art experiences.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I am fascinated by how light/color effects people psychologically and physiologically. Colors have psychological meanings that are powerful such as yellow being a happy color. Light therapy is now used for many medical applications. So as an artist, how do I use this understanding to create powerful art experiences?
I am inspired by “The Map of Consciousness Explained – A proven Energy Scale to Actualize Your Ultimate Potential.” Essentially, the map has a spectrum of low energetic feelings such as Guilt and Shame and high energetic feelings like Joy and Love.
I looked at many video games and saw that they were “first-person shooters” focused on the “fight or flight” that activates the “kill or be killed” psychological response. This both places the users in the lower levels of Anger and Fear while normalizing the efficacy of killing.
So, when I set out to make Neo Art Space VR, it was important to ensure that people felt the higher energies of Awe, Wonder and Joy through experiencing beautiful living light art and ethereal music all while having “surprise and delight” moments of interactivity that people can share with friends.
Further, I wanted Neo Art Space to create a connection for people with the planets and stars “in the neighborhood” that simply can’t be experienced on earth. I hope people feel a sense of cosmic unity. We read about black holes, but what does it feel like to walk through a black hole and emerge in a galaxy of living planets and stars in dazzling light colors? Neo Art Space provides that experience.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is seeing people express such joy and a sense of wonder and awe when they experience my artwork – from seeing paintings in 3D to kinetic dichroic mobiles that activate spaces with rays of colors to entering a far-off galaxy of light art in Virtual Reality. I love hearing the comments such as “this is sooo cool,” “this is mind blowing,” “words can’t explain,” or, “dude, this is dope!” I love the fact that my art brings a sense of “wow” to people.
