We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Philip Gutting a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Philip, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Everything to do with my business from the start to currently started with a risk .When I first started being a promoter no venues would allow me to do any shows either because of my age, I was (17/18) at the time or because they didn’t allow hip-hop. I had to take money out of my own pocket and buy all the equipment and when i mean everything, i mean everything. Then I had to find an art gallery and rent it, then find my own security, all the artists, everything. I planned an entire event from ground up with no help, and no guidance. It was all me with my money on the line and from that risk it became what it is today.
Philip, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Growing up I always had really big dreams, even though I’m from a city that really has nothing big coming from it. Growing up in Mason City, Iowa and looking back at it, living in a town that was drug infested with fights everyday in school . At one point my school was so down bad they placed us in trailers for our classrooms, which was awful. Then we were getting searched for bombs before school every day .I could talk about this all day but even though I went through this while growing up I still wanted to play in the NFL. Unfortunately that didn’t work but I always wanted to be in some sort of entertainment business. First starting out making music, then I decided instead of being the artist, I would work behind the scenes. I started hosting parties then I did show’s managing artists. Then I started with podcasts and I take a lot pride helping artists get to the next level .What I think sets me apart is I’ve never flopped on a show. Everything I’ve ever done has been to produce a good product and good business. The thing I’m most proud of, you can ask any artist or client anyone I have worked with and they will tell you I’m a good person and always have a great product. I promise you that I’m the best promoter in my state, I can do local shows or big acts , there will always will be a packed crowd and a good time. This is all this thanks’ to FBG Duck , i always wanna give him his flowers every time, he’s the one who put me in position with everything I’ve done and I’m forever grateful for my friendship with him.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal at this point is to have an artist that I work with to have an RIAA certified song. Most of my other goal’s I’ve hit, so that’s the last goal, also I would love to be one of the biggest sports gambler in the world but talking about that is for a different day
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding thing is developing an artist and seeing them grow from the ground up. I’ve seen it multiple times and its a very good feeling knowing how much of a impact I have. Knowing how much I can really do when I put my mind and effort towards it.
