Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Phil Thomas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Phil, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I did not come up with idea, and that is a long story. I literally woke up with full knowledge this idea on November 25th of 2022 after saying a prayer for my friend Kane. Kane owned MBS CrossFit at the time which was going through significant financial hardship and having to relocate his gym given very unfortunate circumstances. I asked for something to help Kane in the paryer, and when I woke up I knew immediately that I was given the idea for 1 on 1 knockout, MMA-esque style CrossFit , and I’ve been on fire about it ever since.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
The irony in all this is I didn’t have any desire to create this business. Previously I was a structural Engineer for 17 years and thoroughly enjoyed the industry. I designed over 60 buildings across the country and worked with a great group of people. I was called out of that and now put on Reps Ahead events all over the country featuring the best Cross-fitters in the world. The biggest thing with this brand is that I literally have no idea where it is going to go, but I’m essentially tasked with promoting and developing a new sport. I suppose the one thing for our fans to know is that this journey has completely changed the direction of my life and I am fully committed to developing the format.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
For me initially it was knowing where my audience was, and they are people who do CrossFit. The main platform for those people is Instagram, so I focused there. As the CrossFit crowd is beginning to turn their eyes towards Reps Ahead, I’m already looking forward to developing the awareness of it on other platforms. If you want to continue to grow, then you need to be agile.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
You need to listen to them and trust them to make critical decisions. There is a great team that is assembling around me, and their feedback and knowledge is extremely important.
