Today we’d like to introduce you to Phil Ross.
Hi Phil, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was young, we lived with my grandparents. My grandfather was a parttime boxing trainer and started me hitting a heavy bag and doing calisthenics at an early age. My father and uncles were all athletes and in the military and some were also in law enforcement. This environment had a profound effect upon my outlook.
I was young for my grade and fairly skinny, but I was strong for my size and participated in football, basketball and baseball. I began lifting weights at the age of 13 and embarked on my wrestling career. 50 years later, I’m still involved in wrestling. As I entered high school, I continued to play football, wrestle and do track. After a serious football injury during my junior year, I concentrated on wrestling, weightlifting and being in top physical condition and was a Division 1 Wrestling Recruit in college. I also started training in karate while in college. Eventually, I stopped wrestling in college and focused on my martial arts and weight lifting.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My road has bee anything but smooth. My struggles are not unique, some people have endured more, others less. If you are destined to succeed, you will overcome obstacles.
Physically: I have had 10 surgeries, some more serious than others. The injury to my neck left me with a spinal cord injury that has impacted the strength and dexterity of my right hand. Overall, I can’t complain, outside of live sparring and rolling (jiu jitsu), I can do most everything that I like to do.
Life Events: I got separated and subsequently divorced. In between the two, I was a 911 survivor and lost my job. My office was on the 25th floor of Tower 2. The jobs that I was able to secure, paid about half of what I was used to making, so I decided to go fulltime with my martial arts and fitness facility. However, I could not afford to pay child support, alimony and maintain my place of residence on the income I was making. I rented out my condo, went back to bouncing and built my business for 2 personal clients and 43 martial arts students to 15 clients and 155 students in less than 2 years. I no longer had to sleep on the floor of my studio.
In 2019, I was enjoying a record year at my studio, graduated with my Masters Degree in Health and Sports Sciences and was selected as the commencement speaker and was a parttime college professor. COVID hit the week after I had launched my first BodyBell Method certification and I was featured in the Trusted Butcher Chef Knife commercial secured from my appearances on the History Channel. I was on top of the world! The results of the pandemic caused my income to plummet by 79% from January 2020 to May of that year. I had to pivot. In December 2020, I closed the school, sold the building an pivoted to an online model and secured a fulltime professorship as I built the business. The BodyBell Method is now a registered trademark and provides continuing education credits for ACE, NASM, AFAA and is the only Kettlebell, Calisthenics and Dynamic Tension certification recognized by the New Jersey State Board of Physical Therapy. I’m also a speaker and presented for SCW Fitness Mania and The Physical Edge organizations and a coach for the Winning Mindset.
