Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Phia Sucevich. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Phia, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
So far in my dance career, the most meaningful project I have worked on was alongside Character Dance Studio and Autumn Jones. The Armenian Music Video Awards was a long-standing project. It was first mentioned to me in September 2024 and then performed at the Dolby Theater in LA. However the process was a new experience for me, I learned so much about hiring dancers, making schedules, and assisting the director of a huge show. While Autumn Jones choreographed the dances performed for our three amazing singers, I worked behind the scenes and fell in love with project organizing and managing. Jones and I assisted Elen Hart and helped her vision come to life. Working on a project for months and putting so much time and dedication into it, made the final result so rewarding. This awards ceremony was meaningful to me because it showed me that I was not only worthy on the stage but also off it, the late nights and meetings were so enjoyable to me, and all the amazing people involved made the experience unforgettable.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
A little about me, I was born and raised in Portland, Oregon and I started dancing when I was two. By the age of seven, I had decided that this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I moved to California 3 years ago to pursue a college degree and start my artistic career, I’m proud to announce that I graduate college in a few weeks and I couldn’t be happier!
My style of dance is a mix of technical training and power. The styles I’m most comfortable in are Contemporary, Commercial Jazz, and Tap dance. I’m an extremely diverse dancer, and I pride myself on being able to jump into any style and look confident.
As a professional dancer in Los Angeles, I can be cast for an array of amazing jobs. Music videos, commercials, tours with artists, dance companies, and smaller gigs like weddings and YouTube videos. There are so many opportunities in LA and I’m so blessed to have a headstart on my career while still getting my degree.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
As an artist, the most rewarding feeling I will ever experience is the final bow during closing night. The pride and happiness I feel is a high that keeps me pushing through the hardest times. Most closing nights are filled with emotions and hugs because not only did you bring a show to life but built a family, who all came together to do one thing. Everyone puts their blood, sweat, and tears into this art and by the time you are done, you leave a piece of yourself in that final show. But it’s worth it, and it’s the most amazing and gratifying feeling in the whole world.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
As an independent artist, I will most likely not have a full-time job in my field of work for a very long time. Almost all dance jobs are contract-based and will end within a few months. Unless I get a company position or a long-term teaching job, I will constantly be looking for the next thing. I don’t think the majority of non-creatives understand the fact that I will work hundreds of jobs in my career, not just a few long-lasting ones.
