We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Peyton Thorp a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Peyton , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I graduated college, not quite knowing what exactly I wanted to do, so I got my real estate license. A few months in, I was prospecting clients with mailings and figured a fun way to catch their attention would be to include an illustrated house on the envelopes. I ended up spending more time and had way more fun doing that than any of the work that came along with real estate. Around that same time, I had a friend reach out and ask for an illustration of the venue for her upcoming wedding to be used for invitations and other day of collateral. I began helping other friends and family on projects and custom work, and quickly realized this was something I eventually wanted to make a full time profession.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am first and foremost and artist, so I began Peyton’s Post as a way to showcase and bring my designs into client’s homes and mailboxes. We are a luxury paper goods and stationery company that features whimiscal and playful watercolor artwork on printed items such as wedding stationery, event invitations, every day paper and much more. The majority of my work consists of custom work for personal and professional clients. I have an e-commerce website that offers semi custom pieces, art prints and gifts.
My work is constantly inspired by everyday surroundings, including interior and architectural design, fashion, travel and the outdoors. I strive to bring a bit of happiness and color, whether that is through an invitation for a first birthday party, or a three piece wedding suite with all of the bells and whistles. No project is every too small or out of the question – I love testing the waters with new and unique ideas!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the joy that my work can bring to others. It’s always fun to hear a client’s vision on paper and then bring it to life. But it’s not always so straightforward! Sometimes a client will come to me with nothing but a color that they like and then my job is to take that, but also pull inspiration from other avenues to create something that they didn’t even know that they loved or could even envision. The greatest joy will always be receiving an “I am obsessed!!!” message back after emailing over a proof. It doesn’t get much better than that!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
My social media presence has been built completely organically, something that I would advise to anyone starting out. While I always wish my audience and engagement may be higher and bigger than it is at times, I do have a genuine following and those that follow do engage and either are, or become, customers. Social media (for me, Instagram and TikTok) is a full time job in and of itself, which can be hard and tricky to navigate. All that said, I think my number one piece of advice would be to be yourself and I think the growth and following will come.
