Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Peyton Pickett. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Peyton, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today.
If I was to start completely over from the ground up, I would network WAY more! For the first few years I was in business I was doing everything completely on my own. Since growing my business and network I’ve really learned how valuable it is to learn from your peers and to ask for help when it’s needed. I can’t help but wonder where my business would be now if I had only asked for help four years ago!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started my photography business in the Summer of 2018 when I was really desperate to find a career I was passionate about. I knew I loved being creative, so I ventured out to find my passion and landed on photography. I took one class and was immediately hooked! When I started out, I focused mainly on family photography and since then I’ve really branched out and found my niche in wedding packages and boudoir, among other portrait sessions. I’m really passionate about telling. a story and conveying emotion through my photos, and especially for my boudoir clients I strive to make sure they always feel empowered and beautiful! I also always want to maintain as inclusive as I can – there are some photographers whose work I absolutely love, but I can’t help but notice their portfolios (boudoir especially) are full of exclusively thin, white women. Here at Photography by Peyton you’ll find bodies of every shape, size, color, and gender!

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
I was able to turn my photography into my full-time career a year ago, but it was not easy and almost didn’t happen at all! I was employed at another company full-time and was pursuing my photography on the side, with hopes of one day turning it full-time. I reached a point with my full-time job where it wasn’t conducive to my lifestyle anymore and was faced with a choice – change my entire daily life to make my job work, or quit cold turkey and pursue photography full-time. It was a scary decision, but I went for it – I quit my job and crossed my fingers that I could bring my photography business more to the forefront without going broke! It took a lot of dedication, but it actually ended up being a pretty seamless transition overall and I haven’t looked back since.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I love being in a career where I feel like I’m genuinely making a difference in people’s lives. I get to pamper my boudoir clients and share in their joy when they see a photo in which they truly feel beautiful. I get to share in my wedding clients’ most special day and be a part of their love story forever. I get to capture those first, raw moments with my newborn clients when they’re getting to know their new little loves and are still navigating parenthood. These are all such intimate moments that most people don’t get to experience as much as I have – I wouldn’t trade it for the world!
