We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Peyton Magee a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Peyton, appreciate you joining us today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
I started my business in January 2019, when I was 11 years old. I was in fifth grade and was interested in starting a business. Looking back, I believe I started out at the perfect time, but I wish I was more prepared for doing so. I wish that I had learned more about what journalism is, how to be a good journalist, and what it meant to run a business. If I started my business sooner I would have been too young to handle the responsibilities that come along with it. If I had started it later I still would have been successful but I would have had less time to dedicate to growing a new idea. Now that I have almost four years of experience, I can balance my business with my other various activities more easily. Starting it when I did gave me a chance for my body and brain to develop which has been crucial to my success.
Peyton, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am the 15-year-old owner of a weekly newsletter, The Loch Lomond Gazette. My original plan was to offer the Gazette in my neighborhood in order to get to know my neighbors and organize events, but it has grown into a much larger community reaching across multiple states. I help my customers by introducing them to other community members via the interview section of my paper. Over time this has formed many new connections because otherwise, they would have not known about each other. What sets me apart is I started this business at a young age (11), and I have never missed an issue. I am about to reach 200 issues, which makes me incredibly proud. I would like potential subscribers to know that I have a mission to build a stronger community and spread a positive influence, and it’s important to support young entrepreneurs.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best way for me to gain new subscribers is through referrals. I also try to make a serious connection with everyone I interview and by doing that they often decide to become a subscriber themselves. In turn, they will share the issue they were interviewed in with friends and family and that also helps me gain new subscribers.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I value the connection I have with all of my subscribers. I am comfortable reaching out to them both personally and professionally and vice versa. I foster loyalty by mentioning their birthdays, utilizing their suggestions, and highlighting their achievements.
