We recently connected with Peyton Hamilton and have shared our conversation below.
Peyton, appreciate you joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
Being a new mom, I have a much more profound respect and appreciation for how wonderful my parents are. A lot of parenting is just trying to do the best you can with the knowledge you have in the given moment. Obviously a lot has changed in parenting in the 30 years since I was a baby, but I believe my mom and dad were way ahead of the curve with knowing how important it was to have freedom to explore our curiosities. My parents have always been extremely supportive of me trying/doing whatever I was interested in – sports, hobbies, activities. The answer was always “yes”!
As I got older, I tried to do the traditional things that were the norm. Graduate high school, go to college, figure out a career etc. but that just wasn’t the life for me. I hated school. I was miserable, depressed and doing a lot of self-medicating. When I eventually dropped out of college my senior year my parents were still supportive of me – even though it may not have been what they envisioned for me.
When I left school and moved back home and started focusing on healing, I discovered my real passion. I started diving into yoga and learning about all kinds of holistic healing modalities. I soon realized that I didn’t hate school and learning, I just hated the system and being told what I was supposed to learn.
Since I left college in 2013, I have completed more than 1,400 hours in education and trainings in yoga, Reiki, TCM, energy work and massage/body work. My parents support and encouragement allowed me to find what really made me feel fulfilled. I will always be grateful that they put my happiness and health at a greater importance than what society dictates is the “right path”.
Peyton, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Oversoul is a business providing healing arts services – Reiki, body work, yoga and meridian based energy work. I work with clients one-on-one in personalized therapeutic sessions and teach these healing modalities to other practitioners/self-healers/students in group classes, workshops and trainings.
Being a first-time-mom to a newborn has definitely shifted my availability and the way I am able to work. Currently I am not taking one-on-one clients but am continuing to teach a weekly yoga class at The Studio in Fort Worth. In addition to teaching group classes, I also host regular workshops and Reiki trainings throughout the year. During this phase of life, I have shifted much deeper into my role as educator.
Although my offerings have changed my mission remains the same. My hope is to empower others to take care of their minds, bodies and and spirits and learn skills to live a happier, healthier, more fulfilled life. To help others realize that we all have the power to overcome and heal the things that ail us mentally, physically and emotionally. The world needs more healers – it is my prayer to help educate and train the next generation of self-healers and wellness practitioners.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Word of mouth and referrals have always been the most effective way for me to meet clients. I never spent any money on marketing and am extremely grateful that my existing clients have helped spread the word about my services and trainings. I have always been of the belief that “if you build it, they will come” and it’s definitely been the case with Oversoul. The universe tends to conspire for you when you are doing what is in your truest alignment.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
The topics and practices that I teach others are things that have personally changed my life. That’s why I am so passionate about what I offer – they worked for me. These wellness tools brought me out of a really dark place. I have always believed if I could do it, so can anyone else. I’m not any different or more special in any way. Everyone has the capacity to feel better and live a healthier, more energetically balanced life.
I think this lived empathy has helped me to become successful. I know what it’s like to feel bad in your body, to struggle with mental health, to not want to live, to feel emotionally drained. I’ve been there! I’ve also been on the other end of the spectrum where I mentally, emotionally and physically feel great. Everyone can feel that way with the right knowledge and discipline.
