Hi Peter, thanks for joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
One of the biggest risks I took was at the beginning of covid. Everyone else was shutting down and cutting back. I decided to charge into the fire head on. I aggressively increased our advertising budget while customers were cancelling like crazy because they were cutting back like everyone else. At the beginning, nothing came in, it seemed like a wasted effort, however, since no one else was competing against us after about 45 days of seeing our ads it finally started to pay off. By month 2 we were gaining customers again and after month 5 we were growing again. I am also proud to say because of this we didn’t take any money from the government.
Peter, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Peter Roesler I am the founder and president of Small Business SEO. I have a BFA of Fine Arts from UNF and a passion for entrepreneurship, I have built and scaled several businesses over the last 23 years. I am also a vastly experienced writer on Inc.com as well as a published author.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Make a decision and stick with it. I’ve got to give my seeds time to grow. I see a lot of people give up before they get to the finish line.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Pivoting is the key to our success. When I started building websites 23 years ago Google wasn’t used much and there wasn’t social media. Both Google and social media are our primary business and we no longer even build websites. The market shifts all the time and it’s critical to be a step ahead of it and moving with it or you will get left behind. For example, AI is a huge part of our market now and most businesses don’t even use it. Since we are already using AI for our business and testing / learning ways to use it to our advantage we have a huge advantage on our competitors.
