We were lucky to catch up with Peter Mignone recently and have shared our conversation below.
Peter, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, I like the rest of the world was cut off from my job and business. The world was changing rapidly and the stability of our global institutions felt as though life as we knew it was at a precipice of change. I was already selling some of my pieces through social media and word of mouth however it was more from a hobbyist standpoint. After being under a countrywide shutdown, we decided to take a leap and set up a booth at a recently opened outdoor art market to sell to the general public. The response was very encouraging and we believed we could pursue the arts as a professional path. We have subsequently spent the past two years traveling to art shows around the state of Florida as well as having some of our pieces in stores and a gallery. Our goals may have changed from our first show, but we still hope to diversify our portfolio of pieces to express our style and vision of contemporary design.
Peter, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My initial foray into creating with wood came from the aftermath of a hurricane that affected NE Florida. Driving around our area post-storm, coupled with some fallen limbs from my maple tree, I was struck with the loss of trees and the unfortunate waste of the wood. I was determined to not let our maple wood go to waste though not ever having worked with wood I was unsure of what that would actually be. It wasn’t until my wife handed me a broken cooking spoon that the idea struck me “I wonder if I could make a spoon from our maple tree?”. From carving my first spoon to creating intricate chopping blocks and islands, table tops, as well as functional wood sculptures, my passion for creating from wood and using sustainable sources has only grown. Now my passion has taken me to helping others solve difficult problems with space and style in both residential and commercial environments. My work is detail oriented and constructed with only the finest materials. What may appear simple or basic, upon further inspection my work shows an understated design aesthetic that is built to last a lifetime.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect is being able to create from raw materials something that is both beautiful and functional. Bringing happiness to others from the work I do gives a feeling of accomplishment and great self-satisfaction.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
For now, our mission of growing the brand is the expansion of creativity. By removing our self-imposed limitations, what can be achieved then becomes limitless. Which then allows our journey to be created as we imagine it to be.
