Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Peter Kim. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Peter thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
When I turned seven, I asked for a CD-player as a my birthday present. Ever since, I have always had a passion for listening, playing, and making music. As I started to hone craft, I noticed how many talented musicians there were in the world and doubted myself, thinking that my music wasn’t good enough to be liked by others. Looking back, I wish I would have started making, and sharing, my music earlier as I’ve learned that the process immensely helps with furthering my musicianship and, most importantly, there are people that resonate with my music and are impacted by it.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Peter Kim, a California based music producer, singer-songwriter, guitar, and musician by the stage name of Ya.Kim. I have always played guitar in many settings including church, live venues, studio recordings, and busking. In 2020, I had the opportunity to join a label called Pac Ave Records to officially begin my career as a musician and released my first EP titled “Oxytocin”. Ever since, I have been releasing my original songs and collaborated with various artists as a producer, session guitarist, and cowriter. Currently, as I work on my original songs, I continue to work with other artists as a producer, and have recently started to work on covers of songs from different artists from various countries in America, and Asia.
I come from a background of a mixture of the Korean, Filipino, and American culture which allows me to create a mixture of different languages, influences, and sounds in my music. This enables me to reach a wider audience and cater to the styles of music they look for. I am always working to further polish my skills and make music that will touch my listeners.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
As an artist, I believe that it is most rewarding when I know that my music has connected with my audience. The many hours of investment that goes into every project feel validated when a listener reaches out to tell me that the music/lyrics of my songs resonated with them.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
As a creative, I think that coming up with new ideas is always a challenge. Taking a concept and building it to a completed, polished, and presentable form of art is something that requires discipline, consistency, and effort. It is also difficult to foresee how the audience will react to the music once it has been released for the public; this can really build an artist up or bring them down. Trying to keep pushing out content for the audience with this is mind definitely requires a lot of courage to do.
