We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful PETER JESSICA NEBIOW. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with PETER below.
PETER, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
In Nigeria where I reside, white collar jobs a few and the competition is massive. I have always known that I would love to be creative and have control of my life.
Then I saw an need for healthy snacks, especially for people on diet, either trying to lose weight due to health restrictions and I decided to be the solution

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Peter Jessica Nebiow, though many people know me as “The Banana Bread Professor.” I am the first of three daughters, and in Nigeria, where I come from, being the first child often comes with significant responsibility.
My journey into healthy food and nutrition began years ago when my grandmother became seriously ill. For several years, I worked alongside my mother to care for her as she navigated the challenges of old age and multiple health conditions. During the latter part of her life, she was placed on a strict diet, and I found myself learning how to prepare meals that were both nutritious and enjoyable.
That experience introduced me to the world of nutrition in a very practical way. I had to find creative ways to make meals and snacks appealing enough to encourage her to eat while still adhering to the dietary guidelines prescribed by doctors and nutritionists. In the process, I discovered a passion for creating healthy foods that people could genuinely enjoy.
Today, that passion has grown into a business dedicated to producing delicious, wholesome snacks and natural beverages. From banana bread and healthy baked treats to refreshing natural drinks, my products are designed for everyday consumers while also catering to people with specific health needs, including those managing diabetes, high blood pressure, or weight-loss goals. Even children enjoy our products because we believe healthy food should never have to compromise on taste.
What truly sets me apart from the typical snack vendor is my commitment to personalization. I work closely with clients to understand their unique needs and create solutions that fit their lifestyles.
One memorable example involved a client who developed pregnancy-induced hypertension. Under medical supervision, her doctor recommended natural beverages that could help support healthy blood pressure levels. Through a referral, she came to us, and we developed a customized hibiscus-based drink, commonly known as zobo. Throughout her pregnancy, this drink became part of her wellness routine, helping her maintain healthier blood pressure levels alongside her doctor’s care.
We have also helped many clients replace high-calorie, sugar-filled soft drinks with healthier natural alternatives. The positive feedback and success stories we receive continue to inspire us and reinforce the impact of our work.
Over the years, we have served more than 3,000 customers across Benue State and neighboring communities. One of the most rewarding aspects of this journey has been hearing how customers have incorporated our products into their daily lives in ways we never anticipated.
Recently, several female customers shared that our zobo drinks appeared to help reduce menstrual discomfort and cramps. Curious about these testimonials, I explored the research and discovered that hibiscus contains compounds that may contribute to reducing inflammation, stress, and menstrual discomfort. It was fascinating to see science supporting what our customers had already experienced.
For me, food is more than nourishment. It is a tool for improving quality of life, supporting wellness, and bringing joy to everyday routines. Knowing that our products not only satisfy cravings but also contribute to healthier lifestyles gives me a deep sense of fulfillment.
Every loaf of banana bread, every healthy snack, and every bottle of natural drink represents my commitment to helping people make better choices without sacrificing flavor. Through this work, I am proud to play a small part in building a healthier and happier community.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Social media has been my most effective source of new customers and one of the key reasons my business was able to grow in its early stages.
When I started the business, I had just moved to a new town makurdi from a big city Lagos and had very few personal contacts. Unlike traditional businesses, I also did not have a physical storefront where customers could walk in and make purchases. My products were made to order and delivered directly to customers, which meant I needed a way to reach people and build trust from the very beginning.
That is where social media became invaluable. Platforms like Facebook allowed me to connect directly with my local community, showcase my products, and tell the story behind my brand. I committed to posting consistently—sometimes several times a day—sharing photos, customer testimonials, and educational content about healthy snacks and natural drinks.
What began as a necessity quickly became one of the most rewarding parts of my entrepreneurial journey. Through social media, I met new customers, built relationships, received valuable feedback, and earned referrals that helped expand my reach. Every review, recommendation, and repeat order strengthened the credibility of my business and introduced my products to even more people.
Looking back, social media was more than just a marketing tool; it was the bridge that connected me to my first customers and helped transform a small idea into a growing business. It allowed me to build a community around healthy living, one post and one customer at a time.

Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
Like many entrepreneurs, I started with a vision that was much bigger than my available resources.
After conducting my research and developing a business plan, I estimated that I would need approximately ₦150,000 to launch my healthy snacks and natural drinks business in 2023. At the time, however, I did not have the capital required to get started.
During that period, a close friend Miracle continually encouraged me to take a leap of faith and pursue my dream. When I shared my financial challenges with her, she made a remarkable gesture that I will never forget. She gave me ₦25,000 from her personal savings as her contribution toward helping me start the business.
I was deeply grateful and encouraged by her belief in me. Her support gave me the confidence to take the next step. I approached a family member and secured an additional ₦25,000 loan. With a total of ₦50,000—just one-third of my original startup budget—I decided to begin.
Starting with limited resources meant I had to be creative. Instead of purchasing new equipment, I borrowed baking pans from family members and used our home oven for production. I learned to maximize every naira, improvise where necessary, and focus on delivering quality products despite the constraints.
What could have been seen as a disadvantage became one of my greatest lessons in entrepreneurship. It taught me resourcefulness, resilience, and the importance of starting with what you have rather than waiting for perfect conditions.
The hard work paid off. Within just one month of launching the business, I was able to repay the family loan in full. That early success reinforced my belief that determination, creativity, and the support of a few people who believe in your vision can be enough to turn an idea into reality.
Looking back, I am reminded that businesses do not always begin with abundant resources. Sometimes, they begin with faith, persistence, and the courage to start where you are.
