Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Peter Hollywood. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Peter, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
When I was 8 yrs old I started my first band/musical project. My friend and I would tape record ourselves playing and singing along with records from Earth, Wind & Fire , Rush and The Cars. I made a drum set consisting of pots and pans from the kitchen with a pad of paper for the snare drum and played it with chopsticks while singing. It was a blast ! That was until my mom would show the recordings off to her friends and embarrass the shit out of me. lol. I knew from that point that i wanted to make music and actually learn how to really play. I saved up enough money for a bass a few years later and bought one from a pawn shop. I started playing in real bands right away and we all learned together how to play and make music in a band setting and started playing shows shortly thereafter. I’ve never looked back.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into the industry by putting on DIY events in various bands. Being in a band and booking other bands for your own events, you start to become part of a community and that community keeps growing.
You start to become a fan of bands and others become a fan of your band. This ends up making great collaborations, friendships, and business partners.
And to make a long story short, this is how our band, MAL, was created: people who were connected through a network of music lovers who noticeably put in so much of their own love and their art.
Compared to some, I’d say one thing that sets us apart is that we keep going. We keep writing, recording, and playing.
With MAL no gig is too big or too small , We rock them all. We love what we do ! We’re an original ROCK trio that is genre fluid from pop to experimental. Another thing that sets us apart is our willingness to explore our musical vision without boundaries. We pack in as much fun as we can along the way and try not to get sidetracked by the ups and downs of making ground in the music industry.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Our goal is to just do our best at being a band and to keep making music that we’re stoked on. Of course we want to get it out to as many people as possible and share as many magical moments with audiences as we can.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
People can help support bands by sharing their music with others and going to shows. It also doesn’t hurt if they buy our music and merch !
In our journey we love meeting new people, discovering amazing bands, and booking them on shows in our town to get them exposure. It’s all about paying it forward and sharing.
Simple as that.
