We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Peter Allen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Peter below.
Hi Peter, thanks for joining us today. Crazy stuff happening is almost as certain as death and taxes – it’s technically “unexpected” but something unexpected happening is to be expected and so can you share a crazy story with our readers
One of the craziest and most rewarding experiences in my business journey was building 953 JAMZ from the ground up while people doubted whether it could even succeed. There were times when I questioned if all the sacrifices, long nights, and challenges were worth it.
Then something amazing started happening. Artists, business owners, and community leaders began reaching out to us for interviews and partnerships. I remember meeting a young lady who had no idea who I was. We started talking, and I ended up giving her first radio interview and later booking her to perform at our Hall of Fame event. That moment reminded me that you never know who you’re going to meet or whose life you’re going to impact.
The craziest part is that what started as a vision has turned into an award-winning digital radio station that has received national recognition and become a platform for voices that might not have otherwise been heard.
Entrepreneurship has taught me that your biggest challenges can become your greatest blessings. There will be people who don’t see your vision, and there will be moments when things don’t go as planned. But if you stay consistent, keep serving others, and remain a person of your word, doors will open that you never imagined.
My motto is simple: Leadership is Service. Everything we’ve built at 953 JAMZ is proof that when you stay committed to your purpose, amazing things can happen.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Dr. Peter Allen, Founder and CEO of 953 JAMZ, Houston’s Home For JAMZ and one of the few minority-owned digital radio stations in the country. I was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and moved to Houston in 1988. Music, radio, and serving my community have always been passions of mine.
My journey into broadcasting started with a love for music and a desire to create opportunities for people who often go unheard. I saw talented artists, entrepreneurs, and community leaders who didn’t always have access to traditional media platforms, so I decided to build one. That vision led to the creation of 953 JAMZ, a platform dedicated to independent artists, community engagement, and giving people a voice.
Today, 953 JAMZ provides music programming, artist interviews, event coverage, promotional opportunities, and community-focused content. We don’t just play music—we create connections, tell stories, and open doors for people who need a platform to be seen and heard.
What sets us apart is our commitment to serving the community first. We believe in relationships over transactions and in using our platform to uplift others. Through the station, we’ve helped artists receive their first interviews, highlighted local businesses, and supported numerous community initiatives.
I am incredibly proud of the recognition I’ve received throughout my journey, including being inducted into the Radio Personality Hall of Fame, receiving two Presidential Lifetime Achievement Awards, my own day in the City of Houston April 9th is known as Peter Allen Day, and earning an Honorary Doctorate of Humanitarianism in Philosophy. However, my greatest accomplishment isn’t the awards it’s knowing that we’ve made a positive impact on people’s lives and created opportunities for others.
My personal philosophy is simple: Leadership is Service. I want people to know that success isn’t just about building a brand; it’s about creating opportunities, serving others, and leaving a lasting impact. My goal has always been to be a voice for the voiceless and to prove that with faith, persistence, and purpose, a vision can become something far greater than you ever imagined.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
One of the greatest examples of resilience in my journey has been the creation and growth of Love After Dark “The Quiet Storm.” What started as a passion for music and meaningful connection turned into a show that has touched listeners in multiple markets and become one of the signature programs on 953 JAMZ.
The journey wasn’t always easy. There were long nights, sacrifices, and moments when I questioned whether the vision would ever become what I believed it could be. Building a brand in digital radio comes with challenges, and there are times when you have to keep going even when others don’t fully understand your vision.
Instead of giving up, I stayed committed to creating something authentic. I wanted Love After Dark “The Quiet Storm” to be more than just a radio show. I wanted it to be an experience a place where listeners could relax, reflect, and reconnect with memories through music. Over time, the show began to grow, listeners embraced it, and opportunities for syndication followed.
That experience taught me one of the biggest lessons of entrepreneurship: consistency and purpose will outlast doubt and obstacles. Every setback became a lesson, and every challenge made me stronger as a leader and broadcaster.
Today, when I look at the success of Love After Dark “The Quiet Storm” and 953 JAMZ as a whole, I’m reminded that resilience isn’t about avoiding hardships it’s about continuing to move forward despite them. Seeing the show grow, connect with listeners, and expand into new markets has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career because it proves that consistency, faith, and purpose truly matter.
My journey is proof that if you stay true to your purpose, keep serving others, and refuse to quit, your vision can grow into something far greater than you ever imagined. As I often say, “Leadership is Service.” I believe that when you lead with purpose, stay consistent, and invest in people, success becomes more than personal achievement it becomes the impact you leave on others.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the biggest lessons I had to unlearn was the idea that I had to do everything myself. Early in my journey, I believed that if I wanted something done right, I had to carry the entire weight of the vision on my shoulders. I wore every hat imaginable and made nearly every decision on my own.
One of the biggest challenges for me was turning over responsibilities to our qualified Program Director. For so long, I had been used to making every decision solo that trusting someone else with key aspects of the station wasn’t easy. It wasn’t about a lack of confidence in their abilities it was about learning to let go and understanding that growth requires trust.
Over time, I realized that building something meaningful isn’t about doing everything yourself it’s about empowering others to lead in their areas of expertise. The success of 953 JAMZ isn’t because of one person; it’s because of a team of dedicated individuals who believe in the vision and bring their own talents and ideas to the table.
I also had to learn that not every opportunity is meant for me. As entrepreneurs, we sometimes feel the need to say yes to everything, but I’ve learned that saying no can be just as important as saying yes. Protecting your time, your peace, and your purpose allows you to focus on the opportunities that truly align with your mission.
The backstory behind these lessons came through both successes and disappointments. There were moments when I tried to carry too much on my own, and those experiences taught me that leadership isn’t about control it’s about trust, service, and creating opportunities for others to succeed.
Today, I lead differently. I delegate more, I trust my team, and I understand that no great vision is built alone. As I often say, “Leadership is Service.” Sometimes the greatest act of leadership is stepping back and allowing other capable people to help carry the vision forward.
