We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Pete Grimes a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Pete, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
That’s a great question and here’s why:
I hope my legacy will be tied to helping many people to tell their stories and share their wisdom.
Their insights can improve the lives of others who will be stronger and inspired to pay it forward, helping others, thus creating a positive ripple effect.
This ripple effect is one of the principal motivational factors that inspired me to write my book:
“C-Level Author: 3 Steps to Legacy Thought Leadership”. In this book I share an easy-to-follow roadmap for becoming an author, expanding your brand, and strengthening your legacy.
I also help people do this through my website www.
Frankly, the best way to keep your message alive and reach more people is to publish a book and place it at the heart of your Legacy Thought Leadership™ strategy.
In this way, you leave a playbook for the leaders of the future, who in turn will help others, thus expanding your impact exponentially around the world and into the future.
I want to be remembered as someone who made a long-lasting, positive impact that created a ripple effect, far and wide.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As a native Californian, I like to “work hard and play hard”!
I have worked for some of the largest, global tech brands and lived around the world; I speak 3 languages, have completed multiple triathlons, and am an avid kite-surfer.
This has helped me get on the international speaking circuit, work alongside Fortune 500, C-level global leaders in strategic roles, and learn the importance of storytelling to share important messages and inspire others.
This is why I am so inspired to help visionaries, C-level executives, and thought leaders (like those reading this article) to write and publish their books, sharing their stories and missions with the world.
At the core of Legacy Thought Leadership is the belief that everyone has a book inside them.
My mission is to inspire people and capture their stories before they are lost.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
This story was as painful for me as for someone else, and a game-changer…
I fell on the idea for this book when I single-handedly robbed a successful executive of a happy moment.
It wasn’t intentional, but it was painful… for both of us.
He had just bounded off the stage of an event where we were both speaking and you could see he was still feeling the adrenaline of the moment and the applause.
Wanting to congratulate him I said, “Fantastic job! You should do this more as part of your future path!”
There was silence…
Finally, he said, “I have always dreamed of that… People tell me I should, but I wouldn’t even know where to start.”
His shoulders slumped. He started telling me that everyone needs to plan their ‘exit strategy’ from corporate life before corporate life shoves them out the door.
Even at 65 years of age, there is still so much more to do after retirement.
Like so many others, he was asking himself the critical question: ‘What’s next?’
He didn’t have an answer…
He walked off for more reflection, or to drink in the bar, and I felt terrible.
It was then that I realized that I could help him!
As a career marketing executive, I could show him how to manage his message and generate the opportunities he was looking for in the future: Whether that is consulting, coaching, public speaking, growing a business, starting a business, looking to advance his career, or to leave a ‘family heirloom’.
This is how Legacy Thought Leadership was born by looking for a way to help.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Yes, and I can almost hear your readers saying: “How am I going to write a book, Pete? I’m not a writer”.
I had to learn that you do not need to be a writer to become an author… you just need a message.
And if you think about it, throughout history, many of the great leaders who’ve been published weren’t writers themselves: Buddha, Jesus Christ, Julius Caesar, Winston Churchill, and many more never wrote anything.
They just had scribes, or their followers, recording it for them.
Additionally, I had to ‘unlearn’ the famous ‘writer’s block’ that paralyzes so many people, keeping them from completing their books:
Just hit ‘Record’!
You can literally tell your story on your phone, record it, and send the audio file to be transcribed.
And think about this: the average book is about 200 pages, which is approximately 40,000 – 60,000 words.
This translates into six to eight hours of speaking for most people. So, you could potentially speak your book into existence over a weekend.
Of course, there is still a lot of work to be done in terms of editing, formatting, design, publication, etc. but a LARGE part of the work is finished: You have your manuscript!
