We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Pernille Kjeldsen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Pernille below.
Pernille, appreciate you joining us today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
I believe that with everything in life, it happens when the time is right. The same goes with my business. I worked as a PR Director for an artist but had the dream about starting my own agency one day, I just didn’t have the guts to actually make the move. When COVID hit, I was laid off and that turned out to be the push I needed. I spent the rest of the day making a business plan and then things took off from there. It was truly a blessing in disguise and the best thing that could have happened. We’re always afraid of the unknown, but often it turns out to be so much better than what we imagine. I think it was the perfect time in my life this happened. Had you asked me at that time if I was ready I would have said no, but we so often underestimate our own skills and really don’t think we’re capable until we have to be. Of course there were a million things I didn’t know back then, but I learned by trying things and still do to this day.
Pernille, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have my own Communication Agency working with clients mostly in the art world, but from other industries as well. It has been the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. The freedom it gives me is important for me to thrive – that I can schedule my day as I like, work from everywhere and choose who I’d like to work with. I feel very blessed. I love working with creative people to help them build their brand and I choose to only work with people I really believe in and are fascinated by. PR is a form of selling and I don’t have the integrity to sell something I don’t believe in myself. I believe being a small agency comes with some benefits, for example most of my clients have by time turned into good friends as well. It of course makes the work more enjoyable, but also makes the experience for them way more personal. My work is my passion and I’m super grateful I get to do what I love every day.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I have been extremely fortunate to get most of my clients through referrals. Word of mouth is truly the best marketing you can get and I’m grateful that my clients, past clients and friends have been so supportive and referred me to new clients. One thing I love about LA, compared to Denmark, is how good people are at helping each other. Networking is super important and most people are so kind to introduce you to someone they know that they think you can benefit from knowing. People also often reach out via my website or my Instagram to ask for my services.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
It’s been a roller coaster ride moving to LA from Denmark 7 years ago and starting a life in a place you know no one. There have been many times I have been close to giving up, but then reminded myself that I am capable of creating the life I want. The episode I mentioned earlier with being laid off was really tough. I was afraid it meant I had to give up my life here and move back to Denmark. But I am a fighter and I don’t give up. I think it comes from when I was young I lost both my parents. If you can go through a loss like that you can go through pretty much anything. It gave me perspective on life and that nothing is as bad as it might seem at the moment. When things are hard I always try to remind myself that it will get better again, that this is happening to teach me a lesson I need to learn. I remind myself to keep trusting and believe that if I put in the hard work things will go my way eventually.
