Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Perla Polo. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Perla thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
We are a small team and the work of creating content was suffocating us.
We had been doing increasingly basic designs or simplified versions of past designs for several months.
We decided to take a nice break from content creation to concentrate on the work in the workshop, until after a few months we managed to harvest new designs. Ideas began to sprout one after the other and now we have a collection coming out that we are very excited about as it includes several elements that we love. This new collection is called Polo&Storch Fruit Co.
We are fruit lovers, we really LOVE them. We also have a beautiful collection of fruit labels and our dream is to one day have a fruit store where we design everything, including recipes, and have zero waste, but that’s a story for another day.
Perla, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
In 2014 we organized an itinerant cultural market, our little utopia where we could combine design, cinema, music, city and a lot of other things. It was the space where we had the perfect pretext to design everything.
Among the activities we did were the handmade workshops, an activity we continued to work with after the design market, in the physical space that would later become our current studio/workshop.
Over time we focused only on design and photography work, but in these handmade workshops we learned a lot and this is what led us to develop our studio Polo&Storch.
We design earrings and make collections with the pretext of creating new universes based on what inspires us and what we like.
We make earrings that are not for everyone: our designs are a total statement. Artists, architects, designers, and above all color and design lovers are the ones who wear them and we are inspired by them.
We are based in Xalapa, Mexico, a small city in the cloud forest of Veracruz. Being quietly here, focused on our designs, we have been sought out from as far away as the SF MOMA or the Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center. We have mounted exhibitions at OOO Creative in Kyoto and GAIA in Mexico City.
Working and exploring is how we have found our style, no matter what support or material we work with, it makes us happy to feel that it really feels like a Polo&Storch piece.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
It happened a little over eleven years ago, in the cultural market in which we would later work during our first years together as a couple.
Besides the obvious interest in each other, we shared a series of topics that would lead us to various creative pursuits, which we were able to deepen further by doing it as a team in which we took advantage of the strengths of both of us.
From there we created a small world in which our multiple interests can live like seeds: waiting for the perfect moment to grow and develop.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The possibility of establishing a communication with our public/clientele, which by evoking feelings can even become emotional at a certain level.
For example with our earrings, our big dream is to be able to bring to those who wear them a bit of joy through color and shape.
In the end it is all about reaching the right people and provoking a pleasant reaction in them.
A very human quest, we believe.
