We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Percy Fortini-Wright. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Percy below.
Percy, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project has been The creative journey of self mastery using my paintings as a vehicle of self expression. Each subject matter I explore becomes a project within themselves.
One of my largest longest projects was a mural of a giant train (orange line) extending 200 feet with a eagle gripping a giant Koi fish with its talons at the entrance of an underground garage at Markley Group in Boston. The piece located near Chinatown was created around the pandemic as a way to bridge American culture with the eagle and the Asian culture with the koi fish. The train symbolized interconnectedness.
Another favorite project was a massive nightscape scene spray-painted approximately 70 x 40 feet located in Central Sq. Cambridge Ma. Most of my night scenes mural projects are site-specific and dictate the location and community there within.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Percy Fortini-Wright is a Boston-based artist known for his unique fusion of graffiti and traditional painting techniques. He holds both a BFA and an MFA from the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. Fortini-Wright’s work is heavily influenced by his background in graffiti, which he began exploring in the late 1990s. This early experience with street art, particularly with wildstyle graffiti, tags, and bubble letters, significantly shapes his current artistic practice.
Fortini-Wright’s art often features dramatic cityscapes, abstract forms, portraits and nature themes. He is particularly noted for his “nightscape” series, which depicts wet streets with dramatic reflections and atmospheric depth, aiming to place the viewer in the “driver’s seat” and capture the transient experience of driving through the city .
His work has been exhibited in both public and private venues, including prestigious events like Art Basel Miami and Art Basel Switzerland. . Additionally, Fortini-Wright has collaborated with brands like Adidas, creating art pieces inspired by the Boston Marathon to benefit the One Fund .
Fortini-Wright describes his process as one that merges representational painting with graffiti’s raw energy, using spray paint and calligraphic marks to explore the interplay between words and images, reflecting his multiracial heritage and varied identities .
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think all humans are creative by nature. What are the most rewarding aspects is the ability to create something out of nothing while also bringing that creative energy or light out of others.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
A personal story that was hard to bounce back from was my mom dying from cancer while my son was being born. Seeing the cycle of life and death first hand was wild. Out of this experience gave me great strength and wisdom that helped me throughout my creative path. To put your artwork out there for the world to see, marvel at, and criticize can be extremely challenging. For this experience, other things became minuscule and comparison.
