We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Pennylyn Woosley. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Pennylyn below.
Pennylyn, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I took a huge leap of faith when I was 27 and decided to pursue my passion as a floral designer. I opened my first brick and mortar florist with little money but a whole lot of hope!! It was a huge risk because I didn’t have any type of nest egg to fall back on. I took everything I had and opened the first location. It was especially scary because it was my first experience personally guaranteeing a commercial lease. If the business failed, so would I!! I would be on the hook for the entire term of the lease which back then was a 5 year commitment. Yikes! At any rate, I was successful and able to grow my retail business into a flourishing enterprise. Now here we are, many years later, and my focus has shifted from retail to events. My team has the honor and pleasure of working with many couples to create their dream wedding!! They say it takes a village – I say it takes an army!! I am fortunate to have a great team that is integral in the success of the business and each of these events.
Pennylyn, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was raised in a family business atmosphere that fostered my creative mind. I was able to learn from members of my family and also through many many classes and workshops to continue to hone my craft into what it has become. We provide full service floral design for weddings and other special events. We help our couples translate their vision for their wedding into a reality by guiding them the entire way, helping them make selections that are within their budget and giving them honest and straightforward advice. We really care about our clients – not to say that others don’t – but it’s not just about the sale for us. We have clients that are repeat customers from the earlier days of our first florist. That makes me extra proud! It’s great to do a good job but it’s better to do a great one;l and they remember that and come back time and time again. To me, that is the biggest compliment. I am most proud of where the company is today and all the love notes we have received from our clients – that makes me most proud! Knowing we had a small part in our clients BIG day is everything to our team! We take extra time to understand our clients goals and provide ways for them to achieve them through our experience and constant continuing education.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Covid was cary – we had so many events be cancelled and or postponed, It was a terrible and very trying time full of stress. We managed to successfully fulfill all of our events once restrictions were lifted but it was a really hard time that seemed like it would never end.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
If we can get behind the idea of community over competition, I think that would help so many fellow creatives. Working together instead of against each other could make a huge difference in our creative ecosystem.
