We were lucky to catch up with Penny Horton recently and have shared our conversation below.
Penny, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I am the first to graduate from university. I am a proud graduate of Wichita State University. I have always wanted to serve. I entered the workforce with a role in social services. A career in serving is limited without continued education or licensing. To serve I returned to school and received my master’s in organizational development and began a career in human resources. I served as a HR (Human Resources) leader for 15 years in corporate America achieving Vice President of Human Resources. With this wonderful experience, I decided to serve others who may have limited or no HR support with Who’s Your HR?, which has offices in multiple locations across the US.
Our mission is to unburden employers everywhere of their people related problems, and our vision is to help businesses everywhere skillfully navigate the legal complexities of being an employer, and empower employer’s and employees’ successes through compliance, risk mitigation, proper management, engagement and inclusiveness.
At the end of the day, I am here to serve humanity, support the magnificent work performed by small and mid-size employers and help them achieve results.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
The leadership journey is an experience. Mine was not without trial or tribulation. As an expert in social services and in human resource management consulting and as an advocate for small business and entrepreneurship, I have supported organizations of all sizes, industries, and locations across the United States during the past twenty-some years. I recognized the need to support organizations and employees, mitigate risk for employers and provide guidance and counsel to leaders which is why I founded Who’s Your HR? In 2018 after serving in corporate America. My company and our staff specialize in strategic guidance that helps businesses navigate the legal complexities of being an employer and perfect their workforce’s performance. 
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I would be shocked if anyone told me the road to launching their business was smooth! Besides, the impact of a global pandemic that we have witnessed in the last few years, and the subsequent staffing issues that have ensued for nearly every employer and many employees since, there have been challenges most entrepreneurs experience such as deciding when to hire, juggling how to do the day to day work for clients versus working on business operations, having steady revenue flow and learning functions of the business – marketing, IT, compliance with federal and state requirements and more. With the focus on unburdening the landscape of HR, my goal has always been to help organizations preempt the concerns of these day-to-day issues, address the legal complexities, operational management, and keeping those awesome employees, and addressing concerns effectively.
In managing and growing this business, I have had to continue the conversation when organizations felt they could not afford to. My job has been to ensure that organizations serve their employees, remain compliant, and grow. With each organization, I keep that focus and that has helped the organizations and employees I support do well.
