We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Peng Zhou. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Peng below.
Peng, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about the early days of establishing your own firm. What can you share?
I started my commercial photography career in 2005. I started as a camera assistant and also worked as a production assistant on different commercial projects. In his spare time, he gradually accumulated my own advertising photography works. A few years later, I started to have my own clients. After that, I worked for different production companies for several years until I began working as a freelance advertising photographer with various advertising agencies.
My experience as a camera assistant and production assistant helped me a lot in my subsequent work. These experiences have allowed me to calmly face various shooting types, client needs, and familiarize myself with the shooting process. For young photographers, I think it is necessary to spend some years accumulating these experiences.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Finding new customers is not easy. They can be introduced through friends, or set up a portfolio website. Let potential customers know about my/your capabilities and business scope. This will take some time, possibly months or even years. As craftsmen, photographers must have a deep understanding of the industry and know the actual needs of the clients. After all, advertising photography is a service. When customers need finished images, they will go directly to consumers. This needs to be kept in mind.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Try the best to complete every shooting in the best possible condition. Photos are the best answer. Only after completing a project that the customer is satisfied with can there be another one.

We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
Advertising photography is a team effort. It requires different people to work together, such as makeup artists, costumers, props and producers, as well as photography assistants and retouchers. Due to different budgets, we may work with different artists for each shoot. This process of cooperation is also a process of running-in and screening.
