We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Pekeetia Levering a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Pekeetia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
To me success means you never stop learning, you keep an open mind and be optimistic in all aspects. You take what you learn and apply it, put that knowledge to work. Success is about prospering in all areas of life, mentally, spiritually, physically and financially. Yes, I’m currently learning about marketing and how to advertise my products. I’ve had many successful marketing professionals explain to me how advertising works and how it can boost my business and draw in my audience and grow my business. My social media views have tripled in the last few months. We are so excited!!! Sucess is growth!
Pekeetia , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Baking was always fun and exciting to me as a kid. While in college I had a part-time job working evenings in a bakery and did basic duties, customer service, cleaning, stocking shelves, washing dishes. As time passed my supervisor offered me the opportunity to attend cake decorating school, I immediately said, yes! After that I continued to advance with the company, I went from being a part-time closer, day baker, lead cake decorator and became an assistant bakery manager. In 2016 I took a leap of faith and launched the business, and it took off quickly. My clientele grew tremendously.
My business offers customized cakes for all occasions, wedding cakes for today’s bride, cake pops, cookies, cupcakes, and cake stand. My goal is to create a cake shop that’s a one-stop shop for our customers. We want customers to purchase everything they want and need from Sweet Kake’s by Kita to make their occasion a success. I’m proud of how far this business has come, and how far it’s going to go. I want my customers, followers and future customers to know we are a people business. Meaning this business is about making sure our customers receive exceptional service along with great tasting products and convenient service.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn the imposter syndrome, doubt that I wasn’t good enough and I didn’t deserve the success. I broke that by no longer comparing myself to other people and no longer comparing my business to other bakeries. This can cause stress, fear, doubt and limit one’s potential to thrive.
I do believe in networking, this can help grow your business, but don’t impersonate. By networking I have been able to take my business ideas and use the resources from networking to grow my business.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Taking the time to get to know people and listen to my customers concerns and feedback. Being genuine, honest, prompt, reliable, ethical in how I do business and affordable. Word of mouth is the best marketing tool.
