We were lucky to catch up with Peggy Yen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Peggy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your creative career?
Executing meaningful occupations is the one that affects my creative works and me. Working as an Occupational Therapist (OT) in Taiwan, I have seen various surviving people. No matter how rich or poor, smart or clumsy, young or aged, from practicing utensils to feed themselves, to adapting into new jobs. They were still finding some meaningful activities to engage in every day.
I tried to help them as the duties of the work, while they also helped me see myself more. And, the truth was I felt satisfied when I worked, but I found myself somehow guilty and restless outside of the character of it.
As a result of wondering for a while, I have tried to put myself do something I feel is meaningful, also engaging into the community, which is being an illustrator with my OT background. And, I am still trying my best in the role.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am Peggy, born and raised in Taiwan, just graduated from MICA Illustration M.A.
My work style is loose with a sense of quirky vibe.
I love humans, cultures, and everything related. I am good at illustrating them vividly from an interesting perspective.
I care about the mood of my illustration rather than every detail. So I love illustrating comparatively rough GIFs, random sketches, quick watercolor paintings, and any other interesting drawings.
The daily life of human beings is one of my favorite topics to illustrate. You can find genuine, interest, and a slice of ironic humor in my bold moody drawings with limited colors, which is my current way of illustrating the world.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
First, everyone should take good care of themselves, their well-being, and also others’ if we still have some power to do that.
Second, In my opinion, doing art is not only for art’s sake. On the other hand, it’s always related to the community,
So, after combining these two points, we will get the best solution, a good cycle, which is artist must support the community, while the community is well enough and gives support as well.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I want the world to see more of what I care about, which is one of the main reasons why I am an illustrator.
Giving people different perspectives, maybe from a catching poster, a funny diary drawing, or a great advertisement, which are purposes to gather more attention, and sympathize with.
