We were lucky to catch up with Peggy Hansen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Peggy , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
We named our company after our mom, Nan! When we launched our company our goal was to bring our family bloody mary mix to market. Nan developed the bloody mary recipe out of a bumper crop of tomatoes one year, that year was 1970, we knew we needed to name the company after her! We started out with Nan’s Naughty or Nice and later changed the name to Nan’s Naughty And Nice to capitalize on NAN. This suggestion was made to us by a friend who is a marketing genius and we still thank her today!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Following my university education I spend most of my career in the financial services industry working primarily in the property and casualty insurance space. I worked in technical roles such as underwriting, marketing, product management and sales but always had dreams on day of owning my own business. I had always grown a garden, primarily tomatoes and every summer and early fall I would make Nan’s Bloody Mary mix in my kitchen to present as gifts to friends and family. I usually received comments from people how good the mix was and that I should start my own business and bring it to market. In 2012 circumstances allowed by to do just that. We saw a market opportunity because the market was full of gimmicky Bloody Mary mixes that used artificial and inferior ingredients so we knew we would be bringing a high quality product with natural ingredients that paired well with the craft spirits that were becoming popular. Our goal was to bring Nan’s recipe, or as close to it as we could to the market to elevate the experience of bloody mary enthusiast and foodies everywhere. No gimmicks, no artificial ingredients, just a classy mix that makes a great bloody mary or an awesome recipe like chili! We are so proud to share this family legacy.
How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
Yes, we sell Nan’s on our website, nansnaughtyandnice.com, on Amazon and the wholesale site Faire. My choice would be to sell primarily on my website because I can build a better rapport and relationship with my customers. Our motto is to treat every customer like it is your only customer. On other sites like Amazon that is almost impossible to do because it is an Amazon customer. The fee structure of other sites also makes the profit side a bit more challenging.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
We are self funded and have been from the beginning. We had a very low cost of entering the market and we started slow. As we grew, we had capital from our organic growth to fuel future growth. That philosophy continues today.
