Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Pearls Daily. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Pearls, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
This May 1st, 2023 will be my fifth year sober. To Celebrate I am partnering with an incredible mocktail company Curious Elixirs to produce a fabulous burlesque show and party! I want to create more creative community spaces that welcome everyone and don’t make others feel pressure to drink. Mindful consumption is important.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I have been acting professionally since I was 17. Theater was my main focus when I got started and I had a strong background in dance. Coming from a small town, dance training was some of the only available performance training. It gave me some building blocks that continue to serve me to this day such as discipline. I am grateful to have dance and movement still be a huge part of my life even though film and TV are my main focus.
I auditioned for a replacement contract for an Off Broadway show called “Play Dead” in 2012 where I met my best friend who was very active in burlesque at the time. She encouraged me to get involved with her and her shows and ten years later I am a full time performer. I most proud of the fact that I get to live my dreams as a full time artist in NYC. Every day something is possible!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
A particular goal or mission I have that is driving me is finding a way to connect both myself and other artists on their path to their dreams. This is why I launched my film production company “Pearls Daily Studios”. So many actors have great ideas and want to be in front of camera, or a writer is dying to get their script going and need the encouragement to keep going and a team that can take action. I have always believed you can do anything with a plan.
We live in such an onscreen world that we need to making content that we are proud of. Thats what I love about film and film production, it is a moment in time captured forever. It is a legacy.
During the 2020 shut down I adapted a script I had written called “Briar” and I shot it with my husband Arthur Woo (who is a wonderful cinematographer). We used our apartment and green screened in another actor and it turned into something magical to me and it really lit a fire under my butt to lean into creating my own work and launching my own company.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I feel the best thing a society can do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem is hiring us, paying us fairly, respecting our boundaries and sharing our work. Many people feel entitled to things for free and not everything can be free. It takes so much to be an artist, a lot of the process people don’t see and since so much. of art and entertaining looks “fun” and “glamorous” they have a hard time understanding why it’s not free. I would never walk into a accountants office and demand that they do my taxes for free. It is a business and it needs to be respected as one.
