Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Pearl Mecenas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Pearl thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about serving the underserved.
Yes, Gifted Blind Artists, Crafters, & Knitters (GiftedBack) is an e-commerce platform that sells products exclusively made by blind/ visually impaired individuals. In addition to our web presence, we host pop-ups throughout the community where the public can meet the blind artisans and shop their handmade collections.
Pearl, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My work experience in healthcare has helped me develop and refine valuable, broadly applicable skills in business development, consulting, and project management. My work duties relied on a diligent work ethic to successfully lead large-scale projects and consistently meet deadlines. I recently shifted my focus to initiate a philanthropic business venture working with blind and visually impaired artists to create a novel e-commerce platform for them to market their products. To advocate for this special population, I establish and foster community partnerships, collaborate with other small businesses/ entrepreneurs, and raise awareness with the general public.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
We maintain a positive environment by reinforcing success with recognition, and when things don’t go as planned, we emphasize encouragement and hope for better outcomes next time. The artists have already faced a lot of adversity and challenges, so my goal is to provide as clear a path as possible for intrinsic fulfillment that comes from sharing their arts and crafts with others. I manage each artist as a unique individual, connecting with them regularly 1:1 to make sure they feel heard and well-supported. I welcome their input for all aspects of the business, making our ventures fluid and collaborative. Ownership and accountability drive us to do the best we can.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I spent 20 years working full-time for the same company while going to college and then to business school. I was able to move through the organization successfully, but my progression as a professional eventually plateaued. Meanwhile, in India, my husband and I worked closely with blind and visually impaired athletes. Rather than becoming consumed by corporate goals, I saw an opportunity to utilize my business skills for a greater purpose. I retired from my job and spent a few months researching how I could best help blind people locally in San Diego, and my experiences eventually led to starting Gifted Blind Artists, Crafters, & Knitters (www.GiftedBack.com).
