Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Pearl Ivory. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Pearl, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One of the most important things small businesses can do, in our view, is to serve underserved communities that are ignored by giant corporations who often are just creating mass-market, one-size-fits-all solutions. Talk to us about how you serve an underserved community.
One of the many ways we contribute to serving the underserved communities is by consistently providing some of their basic necessities i.e, toiletries, clothing, prayer and encouragement throughout The Houston Metroplex. We are so blessed to live in a city where our Mayor is working just as hard as we are to provide for the unhoused community.
Pearl, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Life After Life is often asked who we are and how did we come about? Our answer remains the same: we are survivors! Survivors of poverty, drugs, sexual abuse, over coming neighborhood statistics, and completing college against all odds.
At some point in our lives we have found ourselves so broken that we didn’t know if we were coming or going. Our mental health was in question. We found ourselves in situations that children should never be. Like searching for loved ones outside of a crack house. Or having to sleep with one eye opened in fear that someone would creep into our room to touch you inappropriately.
Since life has happened to us all, both individually and collectively, we believe that in spite of it all there is still life to live after life has thrown you all the curve balls in the world. We believe that by sharing with the world our story of how we overcame all that life threw at us that it will inspire others to see that they too can triumph and have victory over any situation.
Our story is precious to us and vital to the function of our business. A family from Acres Home, surrounded by poverty, drugs, and sexual abuse, but like the phoenix, we rose! Our mother has her PhD, one sister has a Masters in Education, and two sisters graduated with their Bachelors degree in Business and Social Work (2022). We are proof that if you don’t stop and keep pushing past your breaking point, that you will win.
We are a family committed to rebuilding the community by healing, and strengthening the family first. We believe that there will always be Life After Life.
Our nonprofit is an all female, African American family owned business. We believe these attributes along with us operating from the heart, is what sets us apart from others.
One of our most proud moments is that we have reached so many different communities here in the Houston Tx, area. Another thing we are proud of is that since we started our nonprofit in 2017 we have remained faithful to the call and dedicated to rebuilding communities by starting with the family first, even through Covid-19…we are still standing.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Because we, The Ivory’s, are known in the community for being givers, it was very easy for us to make this transition into our nonprofit. We have a very open policy as it relates to taking request and informing us when people may be in need, if we can help meet that need…we don’t hesitate to step in.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
With this social media world we live in, it has been very vital to us connecting and growing our clientele. We have a very present social media platform, where we share the events we host, volunteer opportunities, as well as inspirational things. Because we have been successful in our endeavors, we have people who are familiar with our work, so they too, tell others about our organization.
