We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Pearl Ash. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Pearl below.
Pearl, appreciate you joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
I would have to say my parents did right by showing me what life and hard work can do for you. My dad was a machinist. My mother was a nurse. They had different shifts, but we were a family and that meant a lot to me. There was a time in my life, where my mother fell ill. I was very young and my dad took over. I had two brothers and my dad to take Care of me. my brothers would comb my hair for me and my dad would cook. These were things they never did before my mother fell ill. But it made me realize that that was love there, My mother recovered and things were back to normal and they were there to support me while I was in school. I played sports I sang, I acted, I really enjoyed the love that I had from my family.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
When I was growing up, our church would have Christmas plays and Easter plays. And my school would have performances. I enjoyed that it was great to learn different songs and use my voice. When I got to High School, also I played basketball and track and I enjoy singing. I was a show Group at my high school and in the course. It just made me realize that life was very interesting. You meet different people when you were in plays you play different characters. It was very impactful. I would watch a lot of movies with my mother and we would sing together. We really liked Lena Horne. My mother went to the same school as the great opera singer Leontyne Price.. It intrigued me that my mother went to school with somebody who became famous.. That kind of peaked my interest a little, but that it would be a real possibility for me. moving forward a few years I became a singer for a show band and have been doing that for over 20 years. Never thought that I could be in a place where I enjoy doing what I do singing and performing to Be a part of my livelihood. That’s been very interesting.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is being able to live your dream out in your actions. What I mean by that is if I’m a singer, I can be an avenue which makes someone feel good about a particular song or a particular scene in the movie because it’s reminiscent of a beautiful time in their lives. As for me, I have the opportunity to become someone else and create a character who is not myself.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I don’t have a particular story from my journey that can illustrate my resilience. I have had negative things happen in my life which Allowed me to realize that everyone goes through something every now and then. When I would have naysayers come at me,, I would take it personal; however, I begin to realize that I am in control my reactions. If it is something that is in my control to make right, I will extend the hand of reconciliation to repair what I can. If it’s nothing that I can do, I give it to God
