Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Peachanda DuBose. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Peachanda, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Honestly,
All of my projects are meaningful. I’ve written films and plays that deal with topics of trauma, homelessness, mental illness, teen peer pressure, substance abuse, attempted s*x trafficking, racism, womanhood, friendship, relationships, physical disabilities, drama, mystery…
All very meaningful, because they all represent the human experience.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I began my journey as a writer, director and producer, later in life. I ended up in the creative arts as a twist if fate. My first play (at age 35) was my effort to help raise money for a church I was a new member of (at the time). The feedback was monumental. I knew I’d stepped into a greater destiny at that point, and the rest is history.
I huge part of why my work stands out, is I’ve learned the importance of honing my craft. In order to be great at anything, you must respect it enough to learn it to the best of your ability. What goes hand in hand with that, is discipline. In the past 15 years of my life, I’ve embraced discipline. If it’s not beneficial to my vision or career, overall, I don’t invest in it. If it’s not enabling me to grow or evolve as an artist, I don’t attach myself to it. Work ethic is my third heartbeat. As an independent artist, No one in the industry will ever outwork me, nor can they ever accomplish what I have done, under the circumstances in which I’ve done it.
Meaning: Enduring over a decade of homelessness, illness, lack of support, and being a single mother, while still producing theater, films, and events.
The thing I’m most proud of, is that I never gave up. On my dream or myself.
Because of my life experiences, I’m able to reach the masses with stories that are real, and that matter.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
If you know of any independent artists, support them. Purchase their content, buy their artwork, stream their songs, buy tickets to their concerts, or events.
Society seems to think that only mainstream is worthy of support, and they never think twice about going to see that box office “new movie” or buying that “new album” from mainstream artists who already have a machine behind them.
They don’t need you like independent artist do,
Some of the most talented people in the world are unsigned, overlooked and under supported.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Despite of the constant resistance I’ve faced as an independent artist, I’ve continued to build my platform, and evolve as an artist. Making history as the only woman with her own streaming platform, with over 8 films written, directed and executive produced by myself.
More to be released in the upcoming year.
