We recently connected with Paz Morales and have shared our conversation below.
Paz, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I remember the exact moment I knew I wanted to pursue a creative path professionally. I was sitting at my mom’s desk, surrounded by the tools of her craft—leather scraps, old jeans, sewing machines working in the background, measuring tapes draped over dress forms. The particular smell of leather , and the sounds of the sewing machines felt like music to my curious, creative mini-self.
I watched her carefully measure her designs, drafting patterns with such focus, while speaking to suppliers and planning the details of her next collection. I was in awe, absorbing every step it took for her to bring her vision to life—how she could transform raw materials into pieces that told stories. When she finally opened her store in Colombia, I knew right then that I wanted the same for myself. The fashion world had so much to offer, and I couldn’t wait to explore it, creating collections of my own, ones that reflected the same dedication and purpose I’d seen in her.
Paz, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Paz Morales, the founder of Mpaz Studio—a sustainable fashion brand that blends artistry, ethical production, and storytelling. My journey into fashion started by falling in love with the creative process. I had a lot of unused clothing so I decided to take my knowledge from fashion school and remodel some pieces and sell them. With time, this grew into a business where I could transformed old into new.
At Mpaz Studio, we focus on upcycling and creating thoughtful, sustainable designs that minimize fashion’s impact on the Earth. A recent highlight of this work was presenting our first collection—crafted entirely from used denim pants—at both Paris Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week. Seeing our designs walk those iconic runways was an unforgettable milestone, and having Julia Fox wear one of our upcycled dresses was truly a proud moment.
What sets Mpaz Studio apart is our dedication to slow, intentional fashion. Each piece is made by women, with an emphasis on creativity, craftsmanship, and responsibility. I want people to know that when they wear Mpaz Studio, they’re wearing more than just a garment—they’re wearing a piece of art, a story of transformation, and a commitment to a better future for fashion and the planet.
I’m most proud of the impact we’re creating: reimagining waste, empowering women, and proving that sustainable fashion can still be bold, beautiful, and boundary-pushing.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the ability to transform ideas into tangible realities that tell a story and make an impact. For me, it’s seeing the journey of a piece—from its raw materials, like used denim pants that might have been discarded, to a finished garment that inspires confidence, beauty, and purpose in the person wearing it.
It’s rewarding to create pieces that not only spark curiosity and admiration but also promote change, proving that fashion can be both beautiful and responsible.
On a deeper level, being a creative allows me to connect with others—whether it’s the women who help bring Mpaz Studio pieces to life, the people who wear and cherish them, or those who see our designs and begin to reimagine fashion’s possibilities. It’s this ability to inspire and impact lives, while staying true to my vision and values, that makes being a creative so meaningful.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Supporting artists and creatives starts with recognizing the immense value they bring to society. For me, the best way to support artists is to value the process behind their pieces, not just the product. Helping amplify their stories by sharing with friends and family, and invest in their craft.
