We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Paytience Markle. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Paytience below.
Paytience, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Any advice for creating a more inclusive workplace?
From the beginning of starting my work, I have strived to create a very inclusive space for creativity. My art provides a space for individuals to express themselves and feel safe in front of my camera to be themselves in a way that they may not in their daily lives. I love meeting my clients that may feel nervous coming in, and when they leave they feel beautiful, honored, encouraged, and seen. I know that I have clients that have chosen to work with me because I am passionate about creating this environment and I am honored that my goal has been witnessed and that people are drawn to that. I want to continue to grow this environment and make sure that no matter who comes to me, that I am able to make those individuals feel safe and able to express themselves for who they are. The beauty of art is that it is individual and about personal expression.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I have always been an artist, but I haven’t always been a photographer. I started out as a musician and poet first and foremost. I have always been drawn to visual art but only got my start about a year and a half ago with a camera. A friend of mine that went to school for film gave me a camera, taught me everything they knew, paid for me to take a class from a colleague of theirs, and I was unstoppable from there. I immediately started doing photoshoots with friends, doing my own research, and eventually started doing photoshoots for locals through an online site that connected you to people that needed a photographer. My business has been slow-growing, but my passion for it hasn’t been. I continue to do my own work and create my own creative projects when I don’t have work for clients. I do this because I love it and not because it’s a business. When I have clients, I love it, but for the most part, I love being able to express myself and create something beautiful. My favorite project that I have been working on is a year-long project of zodiac photoshoots for each zodiac sign where I choose a model with a birthday in that zodiac season and come up with a creative photoshoot for each zodiac sign.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I have recently relocated to South Florida and it has proved to be a bit of a set back for business that has been a little discouraging. Business was really picking up for me in Kansas City where I am from, so it was disheartening to essentially start over in Florida where I don’t have an client base and start from scratch on creating a client base. The website that I have gotten clients from in Kansas City has not been successful at all for me in Florida, so I have had to get more creative with how I will try and get clients in a state that is even more saturated with talented artists. I have felt discouraged at times, but I have come up with some new business ideas that I am hoping will fuel some new clients and am back on track with getting my creative model shoots up and running in a new state and am hoping to get my creative juices flowing in this new environment. It takes a long time to build a client base, but I am hoping that I will be as a successful here and maybe even more so than I was in Kansas City.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, I love being able to foster self-love in my photoshoots with my clients. It’s one of my favorite things about my photoshoots. I love the creative aspects, but I’ve really taken a love for encouraging and loving on my clients. Even clients that have experience with modeling come in with nervousness and insecurities and I love being able to say encouraging things and building people up during the shoots. I see the confidence growing throughout the sessions and the nervousness melting off of them and their poses coming alive, as they stop overthinking the fact that they are in front of the camera. I love to just be able to hang out with the client, and make it feel as if it’s just me and the client and create a relaxed environment. I absolutely love the moment that I am able to show them a few of the best pictures from the shoot that I am very proud of and see how blown away they are at how they look in the photos and know that every time they feel like a million bucks. I can guarantee that my clients always walk away with more confidence and that has become one of my favorite parts of the process.
